New Delhi: The Congress party has sharply reacted to recent remarks made by former US President Donald Trump in which he appeared to compare Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi with former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. In his speech, Trump also referred to India and Pakistan in a hyphenated context, which has historically been sensitive in Indian diplomatic and political circles.

Taking serious note of Trump’s comments, the Congress questioned whether such statements were acceptable to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). Addressing the media, Congress spokespersons criticized the apparent silence from the government and demanded an official clarification on India's position regarding the remarks made by the former American President.

“Is this acceptable to the PMO? When Donald Trump draws a parallel between Prime Minister Modi and Nawaz Sharif, and refers to India and Pakistan as if they are on equal footing, it not only undermines India’s standing but raises serious diplomatic concerns,” the Congress party said in a statement.

During a campaign speech in the United States, Trump recalled conversations he had with global leaders during his presidency. In doing so, he mentioned both Modi and Sharif and characterized his interactions with them in a similar tone. The speech has drawn widespread attention in Indian political circles, particularly because India has consistently rejected the idea of being diplomatically linked or "hyphenated" with Pakistan.

Historically, India has emphasized its independent global identity and has distanced itself from comparisons that equate its position with that of Pakistan, especially in matters of international diplomacy and security. Successive governments have rejected any effort to view the two nations under the same strategic lens.

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh stated that Trump's remarks were not only diplomatically inappropriate but also potentially damaging to India’s global image. He called on the government to clearly disassociate itself from any equivalence made between India and Pakistan.

“India is a rising global power with significant achievements in technology, economy, and diplomacy. To be clubbed with Pakistan in any context dilutes that progress. The PMO must clarify its position,” Ramesh added.

While the Ministry of External Affairs has not officially responded to Trump’s comments, political analysts believe that such statements, even from a former leader, can influence public perception and diplomatic discourse. The Congress party also urged the Indian government to reinforce India’s distinct identity on the global stage and reject any narrative that seeks to equate it with Pakistan.

Political observers note that Trump's comments may have been made in a rhetorical or anecdotal context, but the opposition maintains that even such informal references must be addressed firmly when national image is at stake.

As debates continue over the implications of Trump’s remarks, the Congress party remains firm in demanding a response from the Prime Minister’s Office, emphasizing that India’s international standing must be protected from inaccurate or inappropriate comparisons.
