The Congress party has sharply criticized Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan for his controversial statement regarding "Sanatana Dharma," calling it misleading and politically motivated. The remarks, which have sparked significant debate, were made by Vijayan in response to ongoing discussions about the nature of the Hindu belief system.

Vijayan, a prominent leader of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala, had earlier stated that “Sanatana Dharma” is not a monolithic concept and that it should not be used for political purposes. His comments have been seen by many as an attempt to align with broader political narratives, particularly in the context of the ongoing national debate on religious identity and communal harmony.

Congress, which is an ally of the Left Front in Kerala, reacted strongly to Vijayan’s statement. Party leaders have accused the Kerala CM of attempting to create confusion and divisiveness by misrepresenting the concept of Sanatana Dharma. According to Congress spokespersons, the comment was part of an effort to undermine Hindu religious beliefs for political leverage.

“This is misleading. Sanatana Dharma is a fundamental part of our heritage and tradition. It is not meant to be distorted for political purposes,” said a senior Congress leader. They further claimed that the statement would only add fuel to the fire of religious discord in the country.

The controversy surrounding Vijayan’s statement is part of a larger discourse on the political exploitation of religious sentiments. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has often highlighted its stance on "Sanatana Dharma" in its outreach to Hindu voters, particularly in the context of electoral campaigns. Meanwhile, opposition parties like Congress have criticized the BJP for using religion to galvanize support, pointing to divisive rhetoric.

Vijayan's comment has also triggered a backlash within Kerala, where the secular nature of the Left-led government is often under scrutiny. His position is now being questioned by both his allies and critics, with many wondering if his statements will impact the state’s political dynamics in the upcoming local elections.
