The Congress has stepped up its criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi after former United States President Donald Trump reiterated his claim that he played a key role in preventing a conflict between India and Pakistan. Referring to Trump’s repeated statements, the Congress said the count of such claims has now reached 70, raising serious questions about India’s diplomatic narrative and the government’s response.
Donald Trump, while speaking at a recent public event, once again asserted that his intervention helped stop a potential war between India and Pakistan and saved millions of lives. He also cited his role in addressing other global conflicts as part of his foreign policy achievements during his tenure as US President. These remarks are not new and have been made by Trump on multiple occasions since leaving office.
Reacting to the latest statement, Congress leaders accused the Modi government of maintaining silence despite repeated assertions by Trump. The party argued that such claims, if left unchallenged, could misrepresent India’s independent decision making in matters of national security and foreign policy. Congress leaders said the Prime Minister should clarify India’s official position and address the repeated references made by the former US President.
The Congress also questioned why the government has not issued a detailed rebuttal despite earlier denials by Indian officials when similar claims were made. Party spokespersons said India has consistently maintained that issues related to India and Pakistan are resolved bilaterally and without third party mediation.
The BJP, however, has previously dismissed Trump’s remarks as personal claims and has stated that India’s foreign policy decisions are taken independently. Government sources have earlier pointed out that India has never accepted any form of external mediation on issues involving Pakistan, including matters related to national security.
Political analysts note that the Congress is using Trump’s repeated statements to highlight what it sees as gaps in the government’s communication strategy. They say the issue has once again brought international diplomacy into domestic political debate, especially ahead of key political developments in the country.
Trump’s comments have often sparked controversy in India, with leaders across the political spectrum reacting strongly in the past. While Indian officials have denied the substance of his claims, Trump has continued to reference his role in easing tensions between the two nuclear armed neighbours.
As the debate continues, observers believe the matter underscores the importance of consistent diplomatic messaging. Whether the government chooses to respond formally to the latest remarks remains to be seen, but the issue has added fresh momentum to political exchanges between the ruling party and the opposition.
