The Congress party has written to the Election Commission of India, seeking an urgent investigation into the alleged misuse of Form 7 applications for the deletion of voters from electoral rolls. The party has accused workers associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party of submitting large numbers of Form 7 requests in a coordinated manner to remove eligible voters.

According to Congress leaders, the alleged misuse is not limited to a single region but has been reported across several states and Union Territories. They claimed that voters belonging to backward classes, minorities, and marginalised communities are being disproportionately targeted. The party described the situation as a serious threat to the integrity of the electoral process.

Form 7 is a statutory form used to seek the deletion of a name from the electoral roll due to reasons such as death, relocation, or duplication. Congress leaders alleged that the form is being misused without proper verification, resulting in the removal of genuine voters. They argued that such actions, if left unchecked, could lead to large scale disenfranchisement.

In its communication to the Election Commission, the Congress demanded an immediate halt to the processing of suspicious Form 7 applications until a thorough review is completed. The party also called for stricter verification mechanisms and accountability to prevent misuse of the electoral system.

Senior Congress leaders stated that free and fair elections depend on transparent voter list management. They alleged that the misuse of Form 7s reflects a centralised strategy aimed at influencing electoral outcomes. The party urged the Election Commission to issue clear guidelines to election officials at the ground level to ensure that no eligible voter is removed without due process.

The Election Commission of India has repeatedly stated that voter list revisions are conducted in accordance with established laws and procedures. The ECI has also maintained that adequate safeguards, including opportunities for objections and appeals, are in place to prevent wrongful deletions. However, the Congress has insisted that recent complaints suggest gaps in implementation.

Political analysts note that concerns over voter list revisions often intensify ahead of elections. They emphasise that transparency and timely redressal of grievances are critical to maintaining public trust in the democratic process.

As of now, the Election Commission has not issued an official response to the Congress party’s allegations. The matter is expected to draw further political attention, particularly with upcoming elections in multiple states. Observers will be closely watching how the ECI addresses the concerns raised and whether additional measures are introduced to safeguard voter rights.
