As the Parliament session approaches, the spotlight remains on whether the Prime Minister will heed the opposition’s call and allow an open discussion on one of the most sensitive and significant issues facing the country today.

The Congress party has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to allow a comprehensive debate in Parliament concerning the current state of national security, particularly in the aftermath of the recent Pahalgam incident in Jammu and Kashmir. The demand comes amid growing public concern and political debate over the country's internal security preparedness and the government's response to evolving threats.

Addressing a press conference, senior Congress leaders questioned the government’s silence on the issue and demanded that both Houses of Parliament be allowed to hold an open and full-fledged debate. According to the party, such a discussion is crucial not only for transparency but also to reassure the public that national security remains a top priority.

Congress spokespersons pointed out that the recent attack in Pahalgam, which reportedly targeted security personnel, highlights serious lapses in intelligence and preparedness. The party emphasized that while national security is a matter of bipartisan concern, Parliament must be informed about the measures being taken to prevent such incidents in the future.

The Congress party has also accused the government of avoiding scrutiny by not allowing a parliamentary debate. It stated that decisions regarding national security must not be taken behind closed doors without democratic oversight. The party claimed that the Modi-led administration has failed to take Parliament into confidence during previous incidents and that such a pattern weakens the institutional fabric of democratic governance.

Further, Congress leaders stressed that national security cannot be viewed in isolation from civil rights, governance, and public policy. They noted that a parliamentary debate would allow members from all parties to contribute ideas, ask important questions, and collectively push for stronger security measures.

Opposition leaders also said that the debate would offer a platform to evaluate the overall security situation in Jammu and Kashmir and the government’s counter-terrorism policies. They highlighted the importance of discussing the social, economic, and political conditions that may contribute to unrest and conflict in the region.

In response to Congress’ demand, the ruling BJP has so far not issued an official statement. However, sources within the government indicate that the Centre may be open to addressing the issue but could prefer doing so through official briefings rather than a public parliamentary debate. This has further intensified calls from the opposition for full transparency and open discussion in the legislative houses.

Political analysts believe that Congress’ move is aimed at increasing pressure on the government ahead of the upcoming parliamentary session. At the same time, they note that the call for a debate reflects broader concerns about institutional accountability and the need for cross-party consensus on national security matters.
