In a statement issued on Friday, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said, “We are deeply concerned about the recent developments involving Indian students in the United States.

The Indian National Congress has raised strong objections over recent reports that multiple Indian students had their US visas revoked after arrival or during their stay in the United States. The party has urged the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to take immediate diplomatic steps to address the issue and seek clarification from US authorities.

In a statement issued on Friday, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said, “We are deeply concerned about the recent developments involving Indian students in the United States. Education is not just a personal journey for these youth, but a representation of India's global engagement. The arbitrary revocation of visas is not only distressing but could also impact Indo-US educational ties.”

The party alleged that many affected students had valid documentation, admission letters, and complied with all necessary formalities before traveling to the United States. Some students were reportedly deported upon arrival or had their student status questioned by immigration authorities, leading to mental and financial distress.

Congress further criticized the Indian government for what it called a “passive approach” to a growing problem. The party called on the MEA to provide legal and consular assistance to affected students and demand a clear explanation from the US government regarding the grounds for such actions.

“It is the duty of the government to protect the interests of Indian citizens abroad. Many families invest their life savings into sending their children to study overseas. The least they deserve is safety, transparency, and accountability,” Ramesh added.

In Parliament, Congress MPs have also sought a discussion on the issue, emphasizing that it goes beyond politics and touches the core of India’s youth aspirations and bilateral relations with the United States. They demanded that a special grievance redressal mechanism be set up by Indian missions in the US to support students facing visa-related challenges.

The Ministry of External Affairs, in response, has said it is aware of the cases and is engaging with US officials. “We are in touch with both the students and the US government to resolve the matter and ensure that those following all legal processes are not subjected to undue hardship,” a spokesperson said.

With the US being a top destination for Indian students, the situation has triggered widespread concern among prospective students and their families. Congress has warned that continued uncertainty may impact India’s education diplomacy and the trust of students in international academic systems.

The Ministry of External Affairs, in response, has said it is aware of the cases and is engaging with US officials.
