The Defence Minister will also hold interactions with other participating ministers, where ongoing defence collaborations, joint training programs, and technology sharing initiatives may be discussed.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is set to travel to China for a crucial meeting of Defence Ministers from Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member states. The visit gains significance due to ongoing border tensions between India and China, particularly the unresolved issues following the Galwan Valley clash of 2020. The agenda is also expected to include Operation Sindoor, India’s recent humanitarian mission in the region.

This will be one of the rare high-level engagements between Indian and Chinese defence officials since the Galwan incident, where soldiers from both nations were involved in a deadly clash along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Eastern Ladakh. Though several rounds of diplomatic and military-level talks have taken place since then, full disengagement in some friction areas is still pending.

Government sources indicate that while the visit is for a multilateral forum, bilateral conversations on the sidelines cannot be ruled out. Rajnath Singh may raise India’s concerns regarding the slow pace of disengagement and the need for restoration of status quo ante in the border areas.

Apart from the India-China dynamic, the SCO meeting will focus on broader security issues concerning the Central Asian region, including counterterrorism, cyber threats, and regional military cooperation. Singh is also expected to underline India’s stance on respecting territorial integrity and the importance of peaceful conflict resolution through dialogue.

One of the expected topics during the multilateral discussions is Operation Sindoor, India’s humanitarian and evacuation mission in West Asia and nearby regions, which involved coordinated military logistics and diplomatic effort. India is likely to showcase this as an example of regional cooperation, preparedness, and humanitarian commitment.

The SCO includes key regional players such as Russia, China, India, Pakistan, and several Central Asian nations. In recent years, the organisation has served as a platform for dialogue on security cooperation and military coordination, despite bilateral tensions between some of its members.

Rajnath Singh’s address at the conference is likely to emphasize India’s commitment to a stable and peaceful Indo-Pacific and South Asian region. He is expected to reiterate the importance of respecting international norms, sovereignty, and open channels of communication, especially at a time when global military and strategic realignments are rapidly evolving.

The Defence Minister will also hold interactions with other participating ministers, where ongoing defence collaborations, joint training programs, and technology sharing initiatives may be discussed. India has been actively engaging in multilateral defence cooperation, and the SCO summit serves as a strategic opportunity to expand these ties.

Officials from the Ministry of Defence have stated that India remains committed to dialogue and peaceful resolution of disputes, but will also protect its territorial integrity at all costs. The visit is expected to reflect both these principles as India continues its diplomatic and strategic engagement with regional partners.
