The Delhi government has decided to extend the benefits of the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme to beneficiaries of its widow pension and disability financial assistance programmes. The decision was approved during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday.
Under the new policy decision, approximately 3.97 lakh widows and 1.31 lakh Divyang persons who receive financial assistance from the Delhi government will be brought under the ambit of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana. Their families will also be eligible to avail the benefits of the scheme. According to official estimates, nearly 5.5 lakh additional families are expected to receive comprehensive health coverage following this move.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that the government remains committed to strengthening the social security net for economically vulnerable sections of society. She said that the expansion of health coverage will ensure that no poor or needy resident of Delhi is deprived of essential medical treatment due to financial constraints. The inclusion of widows and persons with disabilities is aimed at providing greater financial protection against rising healthcare costs.
Ayushman Bharat, also known as the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, provides health insurance coverage for eligible families, covering hospitalisation expenses for secondary and tertiary care treatment. The scheme is designed to reduce out of pocket expenditure on medical care and improve access to quality healthcare services.
With this decision, the total number of families covered under Ayushman Bharat in Delhi is expected to increase significantly. Officials noted that around 5.5 lakh families are already benefiting from the scheme in the national capital. The newly added beneficiaries will be in addition to those covered under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana and Priority Household categories, senior citizens above 70 years of age, Accredited Social Health Activists workers, and Anganwadi workers and helpers.
Government sources indicated that the Health Department will soon initiate the process of updating beneficiary data and issuing Ayushman cards to eligible families. Awareness campaigns are also expected to be conducted to ensure that newly enrolled beneficiaries understand how to access services under the scheme.
Social welfare experts have welcomed the decision, stating that widows and persons with disabilities often face multiple socio economic challenges and require enhanced support systems. Access to free or subsidised healthcare can play a critical role in improving their quality of life.
The Delhi government has emphasised that strengthening healthcare access remains a priority area. By integrating social welfare beneficiaries with a national health protection scheme, the administration aims to create a more inclusive and equitable healthcare framework.
Officials added that the expansion of coverage aligns with broader efforts to ensure universal health security and financial risk protection for vulnerable groups. The implementation process will be closely monitored to ensure that benefits reach intended recipients without administrative delays.
