Features like energy-efficient systems, solar power usage, rainwater harvesting, and digital governance infrastructure will be prioritised to reflect the city’s push toward sustainable urban development.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has stated that the government is set to initiate the process of selecting a location for building a new state secretariat. The announcement comes as part of the government’s broader plan to improve administrative efficiency and provide modern infrastructure to support day-to-day governance in the National Capital Territory.

Speaking to the media, CM Rekha Gupta said that the current arrangements, which involve multiple government departments operating from scattered buildings across the city, create unnecessary delays and coordination challenges. “A centralised, well-equipped secretariat is essential for seamless governance and service delivery. We are committed to creating a space that serves both the administration and the people of Delhi better,” she said.

The Chief Minister added that an expert committee will be formed to evaluate potential locations. The committee will comprise senior officials from the Public Works Department, Urban Development, Delhi Development Authority, and representatives from the Delhi Police and Delhi Jal Board. Factors such as land availability, connectivity, public transport access, and impact on the environment will be considered before finalising the site.

According to government sources, preliminary discussions have already taken place regarding potential areas in Central and South-West Delhi that could host the new secretariat complex. While no location has been officially confirmed, the plan is to ensure the new building is accessible from all parts of the city and can accommodate a growing number of departments in the future.

The government also aims to incorporate green building standards and smart technologies in the design and construction of the secretariat. Features like energy-efficient systems, solar power usage, rainwater harvesting, and digital governance infrastructure will be prioritised to reflect the city’s push toward sustainable urban development.

This move is also being seen as a step toward long-term planning for the capital’s administrative needs. The current Secretariat building at ITO has been facing space constraints and lacks modern infrastructure. Over time, the increasing complexity of governance and the addition of new departments have made it necessary to develop a more comprehensive and centralised administrative facility.

CM Rekha Gupta emphasized that public funds would be used judiciously and the process would be carried out with full transparency. “We will ensure that this initiative reflects responsible planning and is carried out in a manner that benefits both the administration and citizens,” she said.

Experts and urban planners have welcomed the move, noting that a unified and strategically located secretariat could improve inter-departmental communication and reduce operational costs. However, they have also advised that public accessibility and minimal disruption during construction must be ensured.

The selection of the location and further planning are expected to take place over the next few months. Once the site is finalised, the government will proceed with preparing a detailed project report and initiate the tender process for construction.
