The Delhi government has announced plans to implement the unified emergency helpline number 112 across the national capital, marking a significant step toward improving emergency response systems. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the initiative will enable residents to access multiple emergency services through a single number, eliminating the need to remember or dial different helplines during critical situations.
The decision follows the Ministry of Home Affairs declaring 112 as the national emergency number for India. In line with this directive, Delhi is moving toward full implementation of the system to ensure faster and more coordinated responses during emergencies. Once operational, a single call to 112 will automatically alert the appropriate agencies based on the nature of the emergency.
According to the Chief Minister, the unified helpline will connect callers to police, fire services, ambulance services, and disaster management authorities simultaneously when required. This integrated approach is expected to reduce response times and improve coordination among various departments, particularly in situations where multiple services are needed.
The 112 emergency response system will also offer multiple ways for citizens to seek assistance. Apart from voice calls, help can be requested through a dedicated mobile application, an emergency button feature, SMS, and online platforms. These options are designed to ensure accessibility for all, including individuals who may be unable to speak during emergencies or those with disabilities.
Officials said the system will use advanced technology to identify the caller’s location, enabling quicker dispatch of emergency services. Centralised control rooms will assess incoming alerts and route them to the relevant agencies without delay. This is expected to enhance efficiency and accountability in handling emergency situations across the city.
The Delhi government has indicated that awareness campaigns will be launched to educate the public about the new emergency helpline and its features. Citizens will be informed about how and when to use the number, as well as the various modes of communication available under the system.
Experts believe that adopting the unified emergency number will bring Delhi in line with global best practices in emergency management. Many countries operate single emergency numbers to simplify access to essential services and reduce confusion during crises. The move is expected to particularly benefit tourists, elderly residents, and people unfamiliar with multiple emergency contact numbers.
The government has also emphasized the importance of training personnel and upgrading infrastructure to ensure the system functions smoothly. Emergency responders and call centre staff will receive specialised training to handle high volumes of calls and coordinate effectively across departments.
Once fully implemented, the 112 helpline is expected to strengthen public safety in Delhi by providing a faster, simpler, and more reliable way for residents to access emergency assistance. The initiative reflects the government’s focus on leveraging technology to improve governance and citizen services.
