Mumbai, June 13 – Maharashtra's political landscape witnessed renewed activity on Thursday as Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis met Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray at his residence in Mumbai. The meeting, which lasted for over an hour, has sparked widespread speculation about a potential realignment or alliance involving Raj Thackeray ahead of the state’s upcoming political contests.

While officials from both sides have described the meeting as a "courtesy visit," the timing has drawn significant attention, especially given the dynamic shifts occurring within Maharashtra politics. The presence of senior BJP strategist Fadnavis with Raj Thackeray just months before key elections has led to speculation of a strategic partnership being discussed behind closed doors.

Sources close to the developments indicate that the discussions may have covered potential coordination in constituencies where both the BJP and MNS have influence, particularly in urban areas like Mumbai, Pune, and Nashik. With the BJP exploring various alliance options to strengthen its hold ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, MNS's support could prove useful in consolidating Marathi votes.

Political observers note that this meeting comes at a time when the relationship between the BJP and the Shiv Sena factions—led by Eknath Shinde and Uddhav Thackeray—remains a point of complexity. Raj Thackeray, who has distanced himself from both factions in recent years, has maintained an independent identity in Maharashtra politics, though his ideological proximity to the BJP on issues like Hindutva has often brought them closer.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Devendra Fadnavis refused to divulge details. “It was a personal and friendly meeting. There was no political agenda,” he said. However, he did not deny the possibility of future political cooperation. Similarly, Raj Thackeray remained non-committal, calling it “a meeting between old friends.”

Despite the leaders downplaying the political significance, reactions poured in from across party lines. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut remarked that such meetings were no longer surprising. “Everyone is looking for relevance and survival. Maharashtra is seeing new calculations every week,” he commented.

Meanwhile, political analysts believe that this meeting may have been a preliminary step toward a broader alliance that could influence urban voter blocs. “The BJP is carefully assessing the ground situation. Bringing Raj Thackeray into the fold could help them in constituencies where the Marathi identity plays a key role,” said political commentator Hemant Desai.

The development has also reignited discussions about whether Raj Thackeray will contest the next Assembly elections independently or align with a larger coalition. For now, both parties have maintained ambiguity, keeping the public and media guessing.

As Maharashtra gears up for high-stakes political battles in the coming months, the Fadnavis-Thackeray meeting could mark the beginning of a new phase of alliance politics in the state.
