Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has shed light on the reasons behind the collapse of the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance before the 2014 Maharashtra Assembly elections.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has shed light on the reasons behind the collapse of the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance before the 2014 Maharashtra Assembly elections. The two parties, which had been allies for nearly 25 years, parted ways due to major disagreements over seat-sharing and leadership positions.

The Seat-Sharing Dispute:

Fadnavis explained that BJP had gained significant political ground after the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, where it secured a historic mandate under Narendra Modi's leadership. Given the party’s strong performance, BJP demanded an equal seat-sharing formula for the Maharashtra Assembly elections. However, Shiv Sena, led by Uddhav Thackeray, was reluctant to reduce its traditional dominance in the state.

Leadership Conflict:

Another key reason for the fallout was the question of leadership. Shiv Sena insisted on having its chief ministerial candidate if the alliance secured a majority. BJP, however, felt that its growing presence in Maharashtra deserved an equal, if not greater, say in leadership decisions. This deadlock ultimately led both parties to contest separately in the 2014 elections.

Post-Election Developments:

After the elections, BJP emerged as the single largest party but fell short of a majority. The Shiv Sena, despite the pre-poll fallout, extended support to BJP and eventually joined the government. However, tensions between the two allies persisted over power-sharing issues, which ultimately led to their split again in 2019.

Conclusion:

The 2014 BJP-Shiv Sena split was driven by a mix of political ambition, power struggles, and changing electoral dynamics. Fadnavis’ revelations highlight how alliances, even those spanning decades, can be tested by political aspirations. While the two parties later reunited, their relationship remained fragile, eventually leading to another split in 2019, reshaping Maharashtra’s political landscape once again.
