Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has made a strong appeal to the Union Government for the construction of a grand memorial dedicated to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in New Delhi, emphasizing the national significance of the Maratha ruler's legacy. Speaking at a cultural event in the capital, Fadnavis stated that Delhi, as the seat of national pride and governance, should house a monument that honors one of India’s greatest warrior-kings.
Fadnavis underscored the idea that Shivaji Maharaj’s contributions were not limited to Maharashtra, but extended to the entire Indian subcontinent. He described the Maratha king as a symbol of valor, administrative excellence, and cultural unity, whose ideals remain relevant in contemporary India.
“Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was not just a regional hero; he was a national icon. A memorial in Delhi will ensure that people from all over the country and the world recognize his legacy,” Fadnavis said.
The proposal aims to establish a statue or museum in a prominent location in Delhi, showcasing Shivaji’s life, his role in establishing Hindavi Swarajya, and his progressive governance policies. Fadnavis added that such a project would serve educational and cultural purposes and could become a major historical attraction.
Political observers believe the proposal could gain momentum, especially with the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, as it may resonate with nationalist and cultural sentiments across various states. Several organizations, including Maratha associations in Delhi, have welcomed Fadnavis’s demand and pledged their support to the initiative.
Senior BJP leaders have hinted that the proposal could be taken up for consideration, though no official announcement has been made by the central government yet. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government has already built a massive Shiv Smarak off the Mumbai coast, and now wishes to replicate that vision at a national level.
Cultural historians and academicians have also supported the idea, suggesting that a Delhi-based memorial would enhance awareness about Shivaji’s historical contributions among students, tourists, and scholars visiting the capital.
If approved, the memorial could become one of the key cultural landmarks in Delhi, joining the ranks of existing heritage structures that pay tribute to India’s rich and diverse history.
