Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Congress leader DK Shivakumar has publicly supported Rahul Gandhi’s allegations of serious irregularities in the state’s voter list. Speaking to the media, Shivakumar stated that numerous instances of bogus votes being created had been brought to the party’s attention, particularly during recent elections. He added that the integrity of the electoral process is at risk if such issues are not addressed transparently.
The Congress party had earlier alleged that thousands of fake entries were found in the voters' list across multiple constituencies in Karnataka. According to Shivakumar, these irregularities may have influenced the outcome of several seats. He called for a thorough investigation by the Election Commission of India and demanded that responsible officials be held accountable for any lapses.
Rahul Gandhi had recently raised similar concerns during a press briefing, warning that democracy cannot survive if electoral rolls are manipulated. His remarks were met with strong reactions from both the Congress party and the ruling BJP, sparking a wider political debate on the credibility of election procedures in the state.
Shivakumar claimed that in some areas, names of deceased individuals or ineligible voters were retained on the list while genuine voters found their names missing. He said the party is compiling data to submit a formal complaint to the Election Commission. According to him, this is not an isolated incident and reflects a larger pattern that needs urgent attention.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has dismissed the allegations, stating that the elections were conducted under the supervision of the Election Commission and followed due process. BJP spokespersons accused the Congress of trying to undermine public trust in democratic institutions and divert attention from their internal challenges. They also challenged Congress to present solid proof rather than making general claims.
Political analysts have noted that such controversies, if not resolved credibly, could have long-term implications for public confidence in the electoral process. Karnataka, being a politically sensitive state, has often seen close contests and high voter turnout, making the integrity of the voter list particularly important.
In response to the allegations, the Election Commission of Karnataka issued a brief statement saying it takes all complaints seriously and is willing to review any specific evidence submitted by political parties. It urged citizens and political representatives to cooperate in maintaining a clean and updated electoral roll.
DK Shivakumar ended his address by stating that democracy depends on fair elections, and if the foundation of the voting process is compromised, public faith in governance will erode. He urged all parties to focus on ensuring a transparent and accountable system that respects every citizen’s right to vote.
The matter remains under political and public scrutiny, with both parties preparing for further legal and electoral developments in the coming months.
