Senior DMK leader and former Member of Parliament TKS Elangovan has raised questions about the Indian government’s alleged engagement with former United States President Donald Trump. He has demanded an official clarification from the Centre regarding reports that suggest the possibility of diplomatic discussions or interactions between Indian representatives and Trump.
In a statement to the media, Elangovan expressed concern over the lack of transparency in international diplomatic affairs, especially when it involves leaders who are not currently in office. “If discussions were held with Mr. Donald Trump, the government must come forward and explain the context and purpose. Such matters must not be kept in the dark from the people or the Parliament,” he said.
His remarks follow unconfirmed media reports and political speculation hinting at unofficial or private diplomatic engagements involving Trump and unnamed Indian officials. Although there has been no official confirmation or denial from the Ministry of External Affairs, the reports have prompted reactions from opposition leaders questioning the intent and implications of such alleged talks.
TKS Elangovan argued that any form of communication involving foreign political figures, particularly those no longer holding office, should be disclosed to maintain public trust. “Transparency in foreign affairs is critical to uphold democratic accountability. If there was a meeting, why was it kept under wraps? What were the topics discussed? These are questions that need clear answers,” he added.
He also emphasized that foreign policy decisions and diplomatic engagements must be conducted through official and institutional channels, rather than through informal or opaque processes. Elangovan stated that such a precedent could lead to confusion and could impact India’s standing in global diplomatic circles.
The DMK leader’s call for accountability comes amid a broader political discourse where opposition parties have been increasingly vocal about the central government's foreign and domestic policies. The Congress and other opposition parties have echoed similar sentiments, demanding more openness in matters of national and international significance.
Political analysts suggest that Elangovan’s comments are not only a call for clarity but also part of a larger narrative seeking transparency in governance. His statement may prompt other leaders to seek explanations or raise the matter in Parliament once the session convenes.
As of now, there has been no official response from the central government or any confirmation from Trump’s side about such a meeting. The Ministry of External Affairs has also not issued any comment regarding the reports.
Until then, the issue remains one of speculation, with growing calls from political parties and the public alike for the government to clarify its position and provide facts about any communication or meeting with the US President.
