The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has initiated formal seat sharing negotiations with its alliance partners in preparation for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The discussions mark the beginning of coordinated efforts to finalise constituency allocations within the DMK led alliance.

As part of the ongoing consultations, Congress general secretary K. C. Venugopal met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin at his Alwarpet residence in Chennai. According to party sources, the meeting focused on the Indian National Congress party’s expectations, preferred constituencies, and overall electoral strategy within the alliance. The discussions are considered significant, as the Congress remains one of the principal partners in the DMK led front.

The seat sharing exercise is a crucial aspect of pre election strategy in Tamil Nadu, where coalition politics plays a decisive role. Parties negotiate constituency allocations based on factors such as past performance, regional influence, and organisational strength. The DMK leadership has indicated that it aims to ensure a balanced distribution that reflects alliance unity while maximising electoral prospects.

Earlier rounds of discussions were also held between DMK Member of Parliament Kanimozhi and senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Those talks reportedly centred on strengthening coordination between the two parties and reviewing their performance in previous elections. Political observers note that maintaining cohesion among allies is essential for presenting a consolidated campaign narrative.

In addition to Congress, the DMK has engaged in discussions with the Indian Union Muslim League regarding seat allocation. The IUML has traditionally been an ally of the DMK in Tamil Nadu and has contested select constituencies as part of the coalition. While specific seat numbers have not been officially announced, party representatives have described the talks as constructive.

The upcoming Assembly elections are expected to witness intense competition among major political formations. The DMK, which currently leads the state government, is seeking to retain power by consolidating its alliance base and highlighting governance initiatives. Meanwhile, opposition parties are also preparing their strategies, including candidate selection and campaign messaging.

Alliance negotiations typically involve multiple rounds of discussion before final announcements are made. Political analysts suggest that early engagement with partners allows sufficient time to resolve differences and coordinate grassroots level campaign efforts.

With election preparations gathering momentum, further meetings between alliance leaders are anticipated in the coming weeks. The final seat sharing formula will play a significant role in shaping the electoral landscape in Tamil Nadu.
