Chennai: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has publicly accused the Union government of misusing the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to target opposition leaders and political rivals. Speaking at a press conference, senior DMK officials alleged that the central agency has deviated from its core mandate of investigating economic offences and is instead being used as a tool to harass dissenters.

The DMK highlighted several recent cases involving its leaders and other opposition politicians where the ED has initiated investigations perceived to be politically motivated. According to the party, such actions are part of a larger strategy to silence critics and weaken political opposition ahead of upcoming elections.

“The ED must function as an independent investigative agency, free from political interference,” said a senior DMK spokesperson. “Using investigative agencies to settle political scores undermines democratic values and erodes public trust in institutions.”

The party demanded that the central government ensure the autonomy of investigative bodies like the ED and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). DMK leaders argued that selective and targeted probes only deepen political polarisation and distract from governance priorities.

The Union government, however, has maintained that all investigations by the ED are conducted strictly on the basis of evidence and within the framework of the law. Officials insist that no political agenda influences the agency’s operations and that ongoing cases are part of routine legal procedures to tackle economic crimes such as money laundering, fraud, and corruption.

Political analysts note that the issue of alleged misuse of investigative agencies has become a recurring theme in Indian politics. Opposition parties frequently accuse the ruling government of deploying agencies like the ED to intimidate political adversaries, while the government defends these actions as necessary enforcement measures.

The DMK’s statements come at a time of heightened political activity, with several states preparing for elections. The party’s criticisms of the ED have resonated with other opposition groups who have voiced similar concerns.

Civil society groups and legal experts have called for greater transparency and reforms to safeguard the independence of law enforcement agencies. They stress the importance of protecting democratic institutions from being used as political tools.

As debates continue, the focus remains on ensuring that investigative agencies operate fairly, uphold the rule of law, and contribute to justice without bias.

The DMK’s call for ending the misuse of the ED underscores the ongoing challenges in balancing law enforcement with political neutrality in India’s vibrant democracy.

The Union government, however, has maintained that all investigations by the ED are conducted strictly on the basis of evidence and within the framework of the law.
