In a significant development ahead of the upcoming elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has served notices to a sitting National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Member of Parliament from Bihar and her husband, who is a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC), over allegations of holding two separate voter identity cards.

According to sources, the matter came to the Election Commission’s attention after complaints were filed by political rivals, claiming that the couple possesses voter cards from different constituencies. If proven, such a case could be in violation of provisions under the Representation of the People Act, which strictly prohibits a person from being registered as a voter in more than one constituency at the same time.

The EC notice has directed both the MP and the MLC to submit a written response within a fixed timeframe, explaining the circumstances under which they allegedly hold multiple voter IDs. Officials have indicated that if the explanation is found unsatisfactory, further legal action, including disqualification from electoral rolls or criminal proceedings, could follow.

Political observers have noted that this controversy comes at a sensitive time, with election campaigns gaining momentum across Bihar. Opposition parties have seized on the issue to criticise the ruling alliance, accusing its members of flouting electoral norms. Some leaders have also demanded a thorough investigation, arguing that such allegations undermine the credibility of the democratic process.

The NDA leaders in question have not yet made an official public statement, but sources close to them suggest that they intend to contest the allegations. They are expected to argue that the presence of multiple voter records could be due to clerical errors or outdated electoral roll entries that have not yet been corrected.

The Election Commission, for its part, has reiterated its commitment to ensuring free and fair elections. Officials stated that possession of dual voter IDs is a serious matter, as it could potentially be misused for multiple voting, thereby impacting the integrity of the electoral process. The Commission has also urged citizens to ensure their voter records are accurate and updated to avoid any similar disputes.

This incident has added to the political drama in Bihar, where parties are already engaged in intense campaigning. The controversy may have electoral repercussions, particularly if the investigation confirms wrongdoing. In such a case, it could lead to disqualification from contesting elections, thereby affecting the political balance in certain constituencies.

While the matter is still under inquiry, the episode serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining transparent electoral rolls. It also highlights the vigilance required by both authorities and citizens to safeguard democratic processes. All eyes will now be on the Election Commission’s next move, as its decision could set a precedent for handling similar cases in the future.
