The Election Commission of India (EC) will initiate the process of issuing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) hearing notices in West Bengal from December 18. The process is being conducted to ensure that all eligible voters are accurately included in the electoral rolls and that any discrepancies are addressed well before upcoming elections.
West Bengal’s Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) will be responsible for issuing the notices to individuals identified as unmapped voters. These are persons whose details were not linked to the 2002 SIR but appear in the 2026 draft electoral rolls. Around 32 lakh voters are estimated to receive such notices during this phase.
The SIR process provides an opportunity for voters to verify their entries, update missing details, and correct any errors in the electoral rolls. This step is critical to maintaining the integrity and accuracy of voter lists, reducing the chances of disputes during elections, and ensuring that eligible citizens are able to exercise their voting rights.
Electoral officials have advised recipients to carefully check the notices and respond promptly. The hearing process may include personal verification at designated offices, submission of required documents, and updates to details such as name, age, or address. Citizens can also object to or raise queries regarding entries they believe are incorrect.
The SIR is part of the Election Commission’s ongoing efforts to enhance the comprehensiveness and transparency of electoral rolls. By targeting unmapped voters and addressing discrepancies, the EC aims to create a more accurate and inclusive voter database ahead of future elections.
Authorities have emphasized that participation in the SIR process is crucial. Eligible citizens who do not respond to the notices may face delays in inclusion in the final electoral rolls. Therefore, the commission encourages all identified voters to engage with the process in a timely manner.
The move comes amid preparations for various state and national-level elections, where accurate voter rolls are essential for free and fair elections. West Bengal’s administration is coordinating closely with EROs and the Election Commission to ensure smooth implementation and to address any issues or queries from the public.
The EC’s initiative reflects its commitment to upholding the democratic process and strengthening citizen participation in the electoral system. Officials also plan to conduct awareness campaigns to inform voters about the SIR hearing notice process and guide them on necessary documentation and verification procedures.
