In a detailed response issued on Tuesday, senior ECI officials stated that Gandhi's claims "ignore facts and established procedures" that are rigorously implemented to ensure a free and fair electoral process.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has strongly refuted recent statements made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, in which he questioned the integrity and transparency of the voting process during the ongoing general elections. In a detailed response issued on Tuesday, senior ECI officials stated that Gandhi's claims "ignore facts and established procedures" that are rigorously implemented to ensure a free and fair electoral process.

Rahul Gandhi, while addressing a public rally earlier this week, alleged irregularities in voter lists and questioned the neutrality of election officers in certain constituencies. His comments quickly sparked a political debate and drew criticism from ruling party leaders and election authorities.

In its official clarification, the ECI said that all procedures related to voter registration, identification, and polling are conducted under strict scrutiny, with checks and balances in place at every stage. “The assertions made by Mr. Rahul Gandhi do not reflect the reality of how India’s electoral system functions. The Commission is bound by the Constitution to uphold democratic principles and ensure equal opportunity for all political parties,” said a senior ECI official.

The Commission also reiterated that India’s voting infrastructure — including Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter Verified Paper Audit Trails (VVPATs) — undergoes regular audits and mock testing in the presence of party representatives. In addition, representatives from all major political parties are allowed to monitor the polling process and raise objections where necessary.

Further, the ECI called upon political leaders to maintain decorum during the election season and refrain from making statements that could erode public trust. “Baseless allegations may create unwarranted doubt among voters, which is detrimental to democratic participation,” the statement read.

The BJP and other NDA leaders welcomed the ECI’s clarification and accused the Congress of making baseless allegations to shift focus from its electoral challenges. On the other hand, Congress party spokespersons defended Gandhi’s remarks, stating they were aimed at raising concerns from ground-level feedback.

Political analysts note that as polling enters its crucial phases, such confrontations between leaders and election bodies are not uncommon. However, they caution that both sides must prioritize voter confidence and democratic integrity above political one-upmanship.

Meanwhile, voter turnout in the second phase of polling has shown strong engagement across several states, with the ECI appealing to citizens to come out in large numbers to exercise their right to vote.
