The Election Commission of India has conducted a comprehensive review of West Bengal’s preparedness ahead of the forthcoming State/Assembly elections. The review focused on various aspects of election management, including polling infrastructure, voter registration, security arrangements, and adherence to COVID-19 safety protocols. Officials from the Commission emphasized the importance of ensuring a free, fair, and transparent election process across the state.
During the review, EC representatives inspected arrangements for polling booths, including electronic voting machines (EVMs), ballot units, and the deployment of trained personnel. They also evaluated accessibility for senior citizens and differently-abled voters to ensure inclusive participation. The Commission stressed that all logistical challenges must be addressed in advance to avoid any disruption on polling day.
Security arrangements formed a critical part of the review. The EC discussed deployment plans for police, paramilitary forces, and central security personnel to maintain law and order throughout the election period. Special attention was given to sensitive constituencies and areas with a history of electoral disputes to prevent violence and ensure voter safety. Coordination between state and central security agencies was also reviewed to facilitate prompt responses to any incidents.
Voter list verification and awareness campaigns were highlighted as essential components of the electoral process. The EC reviewed procedures for updating the voter database and removing duplicate or inaccurate entries. Awareness campaigns, including voter education drives and communication through multiple channels, are being intensified to maximize voter turnout and ensure that every eligible citizen can exercise their right to vote.
The Commission also reinforced the importance of strict adherence to the Model Code of Conduct. Political parties and candidates were reminded to follow regulations on campaign activities, spending limits, and ethical conduct. Monitoring mechanisms are being strengthened to address violations and maintain a level playing field.
COVID-19 safety measures remain a priority, with provisions for sanitization, social distancing, and protective equipment at polling stations. Election officials are coordinating with health authorities to ensure voter safety, especially in high-density areas. Special arrangements, such as staggered polling timings and additional staff, are being considered to minimize crowding and maintain public health standards.
Officials further discussed contingency plans for any emergencies, including natural disasters, technical issues with EVMs, or security threats. The aim is to ensure uninterrupted polling and transparent counting of votes.
The review underscores the Election Commission’s commitment to conducting elections in a systematic and efficient manner, addressing both logistical and administrative challenges. By closely monitoring preparedness in West Bengal, the EC seeks to uphold the integrity of the democratic process and facilitate smooth and fair elections across all districts.
