An FIR has been lodged following the circulation of a forged letter that falsely claims to have been written by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, triggering political attention ahead of the Assam Assembly elections. The document, which appeared on social media platforms and messaging groups, called for internal changes and a “course correction” before the upcoming polls.

Union Minister Sonowal has strongly denied authorship of the letter, stating that it is entirely fabricated and bears no connection to him. According to sources, the letter carried a forged signature and a fake official letterhead, making it appear authentic at first glance. Once the matter came to light, a formal complaint was filed, leading to the registration of an FIR by the police.

Law enforcement agencies have begun an investigation to trace the origin of the forged letter and identify those involved in its creation and circulation. Officials have described the act as a serious criminal offence, as it involves impersonation, forgery, and the potential to mislead the public and disrupt the political environment during an election period.

Authorities are examining digital footprints, including social media posts and messaging platforms, to determine how widely the document was shared and whether it was part of a coordinated attempt to spread misinformation. Cybercrime units are also expected to assist in tracking the source of the fake communication.

Political observers note that the timing of the forged letter is significant, as Assam is heading towards Assembly elections. The circulation of such documents can influence public perception and create confusion within political circles. Legal experts have pointed out that forging official correspondence in the name of a Union Minister can attract multiple charges under the Indian Penal Code, including sections related to forgery, cheating, and criminal conspiracy.

Sonowal’s office has reiterated that the minister had no role in drafting or circulating the letter and urged the public not to believe unverified content shared online. Officials have also appealed to citizens to rely on official statements and verified sources for information related to political developments.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns over misinformation and fake documents being used as tools for political manipulation, especially during election seasons. Authorities have assured that strict action will be taken against those found guilty, and the investigation is ongoing.
