The Bihar government's recent announcement to provide free electricity has sparked a fresh political battle between alliance partners Janata Dal (United) and Rashtriya Janata Dal. The policy, which offers free electricity to a specific category of domestic consumers, is being celebrated and contested by different factions within the ruling alliance.
JD(U) leaders, speaking at a press conference, described the scheme as a major relief for the common people. According to them, it is a “gift” from the government to ease the financial burden on households, especially in rural and semi-urban areas. They also framed the initiative as a continuation of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s long-standing commitment to inclusive governance and pro-poor policies.
On the other hand, the RJD, led by Tejashwi Yadav, took a different tone. Party spokespersons stated that the implementation of free electricity is a clear acknowledgment of Tejashwi Yadav’s vision, which has consistently emphasized social equity and public welfare. According to the RJD, the policy is not just administrative, but ideological, aligning with their long-standing manifesto promises.
They further claimed that the Chief Minister’s support for the scheme is a sign of alignment with Tejashwi’s leadership ideas and his growing influence in state politics. Some RJD leaders even described the move as Nitish Kumar “surrendering” to Tejashwi’s political roadmap, sparking internal discussions about the power dynamic within the alliance.
Political analysts observe that this scheme may serve a dual purpose. It is both a welfare initiative with economic benefits for the public and a political strategy to reinforce voter support before the upcoming elections. By delivering on a demand that has been part of the RJD’s narrative, the government may be seeking to appeal to a wider section of the electorate.
Critics, however, have raised concerns about the fiscal sustainability of the move. Some opposition voices argue that while free electricity may provide short-term relief, it could increase pressure on the state’s budget and lead to administrative challenges in implementation. They have called for a transparent funding model and clear eligibility criteria to avoid misuse.
The Energy Department has clarified that the scheme is targeted at economically weaker households and that steps are being taken to ensure proper verification and delivery. The department also stated that the measure is designed to boost rural productivity by supporting small-scale industries and agricultural operations.
As the policy rolls out, both JD(U) and RJD are expected to continue using it as a platform to showcase their leadership. While JD(U) positions it as part of its governance legacy, RJD promotes it as proof of Tejashwi Yadav’s growing influence and future leadership potential.
This development underscores the complex relationship between the two parties and reflects how governance decisions are increasingly shaped by electoral strategies and internal alliance dynamics. The public response and implementation success will ultimately determine its political impact.
