The Chinese government's plan to construct a massive hydropower project on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra) river has raised alarm in India due to the possible impact on downstream water flow.

Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi has called on the Central Government to address growing concerns over China's dam project on the Brahmaputra river. Speaking in Parliament, Gogoi highlighted the potential threats posed by the project to India's water security, agriculture, and ecology, particularly in the northeastern states.

The Chinese government's plan to construct a massive hydropower project on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra) river has raised alarm in India due to the possible impact on downstream water flow. Gogoi emphasized the need for diplomatic engagement to safeguard India's interests and urged the Centre to initiate talks with China.

"China's dam project poses a significant threat to the livelihoods of people in Assam and other northeastern states. The government must take proactive measures to ensure water security and ecological balance," Gogoi said. He also highlighted the potential risk of floods and disruption to agriculture, which could severely impact local communities.

Gogoi further stressed the importance of international collaboration, suggesting that India should engage with neighboring countries affected by transboundary rivers to present a unified stance. He called for a comprehensive strategy that includes diplomatic negotiations, environmental impact assessments, and contingency planning for affected regions.

Political analysts view Gogoi's statements as a strategic move to pressure the ruling party into addressing national security and environmental concerns. His remarks come amid growing public anxiety over China's expanding infrastructure projects along shared water bodies.

In response, the Ministry of External Affairs assured the public that India is closely monitoring the situation. A government spokesperson stated, "We are aware of China's activities and are in regular communication with Beijing. The safety and security of our citizens are our top priority."

Experts have also called for transparent data-sharing mechanisms between India and China to accurately assess the project's impact on water flow and ecology. Environmental activists have urged both nations to adopt sustainable development practices to minimize ecological harm.

The political debate continues as opposition parties demand a clear action plan from the Centre. Meanwhile, Gogoi's appeal has resonated with communities in Assam and the northeastern region, who are concerned about their water resources and agricultural stability.

As diplomatic dialogues unfold, the issue of China's dam project remains a critical geopolitical concern, influencing regional dynamics and international relations.

The government must take proactive measures to ensure water security and ecological balance," Gogoi said.
