He urged leaders across party lines to maintain a unified approach in foreign affairs, saying national interest must transcend political rivalry.

Senior Congress leader and statesman Karan Singh has supported the idea of India’s active global outreach, stating that such efforts are in the country’s long-term interest. Addressing recent public discourse on the Indian government's foreign diplomacy initiatives, Singh remarked that engaging with the global community is a strategic necessity, not a political display. He also noted that this approach is not new and pointed to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s strong international engagement during her tenure.

Karan Singh, who served as a minister in Indira Gandhi’s cabinet and held various diplomatic assignments, shared his views during a press interaction. He stated that meaningful diplomacy and consistent foreign visits have been part of India’s foreign policy framework for decades. “Indira Gandhi recognized early on that for India to grow, it had to strengthen its voice and presence on the global stage. Her diplomatic efforts opened new avenues for India in global forums,” he said.

He further emphasized that outreach efforts help create bilateral partnerships, enhance trade, and foster cooperation in education, technology, and defense. Singh acknowledged that while domestic governance remains a priority, foreign policy must be seen as an extension of national interest.

Addressing criticisms that foreign visits may distract from internal issues, Singh argued that both dimensions of governance—domestic and international—must be balanced. “Criticism of global outreach often lacks context. Diplomacy is not just about meetings and photo-ops. It is about securing long-term benefits for the country through strategic alliances and multilateral cooperation,” he explained.

Karan Singh also highlighted the significance of continuity in foreign policy. He observed that while governments may change, India’s core diplomatic goals—peace, development, and global collaboration—should remain consistent. He urged leaders across party lines to maintain a unified approach in foreign affairs, saying national interest must transcend political rivalry.

Singh also praised India’s growing presence in global summits, regional forums, and multilateral organizations, noting that it reflects the country’s rising stature. He added that effective foreign policy also involves cultural diplomacy, diaspora engagement, and promoting India’s soft power through initiatives like yoga, education, and heritage promotion.

The Congress veteran, known for his moderate and statesmanlike views, concluded by calling for an informed public discourse on diplomacy. “We must look beyond politics when evaluating foreign policy decisions. What matters is whether these efforts help India secure its interests in an increasingly interconnected world,” he said.

Karan Singh’s remarks were seen as a balanced perspective amidst ongoing debates about the government’s focus on international visits. His comparison to Indira Gandhi’s global outreach efforts serves as a reminder that India’s engagement with the world has always played a key role in shaping its identity and influence.
