The central government has revoked the detention of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act, allowing his immediate release. The Ministry of Home Affairs announced the decision on Saturday, stating that it was taken after due consideration and in line with the government’s objective of promoting peace, stability, and constructive dialogue in Ladakh.
In an official statement, the ministry said the government exercised its powers under the National Security Act to withdraw the detention order. The statement noted that Wangchuk had already completed nearly half of the detention period under the Act. Officials said the decision reflects the government’s intention to create an environment that supports dialogue and cooperation among different stakeholders in the region.
The Ministry of Home Affairs emphasized that the government remains committed to maintaining peace and strengthening mutual trust in Ladakh. According to the statement, fostering a stable atmosphere is essential for facilitating discussions with community leaders, civil society groups, and other stakeholders. The ministry said constructive engagement is necessary to address the aspirations and concerns expressed by people in the region.
Authorities also pointed out that the government has been actively engaging with local representatives and community leaders in Ladakh for some time. These discussions are aimed at understanding the issues raised by residents and identifying possible solutions that balance development, environmental protection, and local governance.
At the same time, the government expressed concern about the impact of prolonged protests and shutdowns in the region. The statement said that bandhs and demonstrations have affected normal life in Ladakh and have had economic and social consequences for several sections of society. According to the ministry, such disruptions have influenced the daily lives of students, job seekers, businesses, tourism operators, and visitors to the region.
Tourism is a significant contributor to Ladakh’s local economy, and officials noted that ongoing protests have affected travel plans and business activities. The government said restoring normalcy is important not only for maintaining public order but also for supporting economic activity and community wellbeing.
Sonam Wangchuk is widely known for his work related to education, environmental sustainability, and climate awareness in the Himalayan region. His activities and public campaigns have often focused on issues such as ecological protection, local development, and the long term impact of climate change in high altitude areas.
Observers say the government’s decision to revoke the detention may help reduce tensions and encourage dialogue between authorities and community groups. Analysts also note that discussions between the administration and local stakeholders are expected to continue as part of efforts to address concerns related to governance, environmental protection, and development in Ladakh.
Officials have reiterated that maintaining peace and promoting cooperation among different groups remain priorities for the administration. The government said it will continue engaging with stakeholders to ensure that the concerns of the people of Ladakh are heard and addressed through dialogue and policy initiatives.
