The political controversy surrounding an alleged purification ritual at a public venue in Haldwani has intensified, with the Congress stepping up its protests in Uttarakhand and seeking intervention from the President of India.
Congress workers and leaders staged a demonstration in Dehradun on September 7, raising objections to an alleged purification ceremony conducted at the Ramlila Ground in Haldwani. The venue had hosted a public meeting addressed by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on August 8. According to reports, a purification yajna was conducted at the same location three days later.
The Congress has strongly criticised the reported ceremony and alleged that it reflected caste-based discrimination. Party leaders have demanded that the Uttarakhand government register an FIR against those responsible and take appropriate legal action.
The issue has gained wider national attention because Kharge is a prominent Scheduled Caste leader and the Congress has framed the controversy as a matter involving dignity, equality and constitutional values. Congress leaders have argued that any act intended to symbolically purify a public place after an event involving a particular individual raises serious questions about social discrimination and untouchability.
The Congress protest in Dehradun was part of a broader campaign against the alleged incident. Thirty two Congress MPs belonging to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities met at the Congress headquarters in New Delhi to discuss the incident and formulate a response. The MPs decided to submit a memorandum to President Droupadi Murmu seeking her intervention and appropriate action.
The MPs described the alleged incident as a serious issue concerning the dignity and self-respect of SC and ST communities. They argued that the matter should be viewed in the context of constitutional guarantees of equality and dignity and the constitutional abolition of untouchability.
