Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has made it clear that he does not intend to move into national politics for at least the next five years, stating that his primary focus will remain on the development and governance of Assam. Addressing public interactions, Sarma said his responsibility lies with the people of the state and that he is committed to fulfilling the promises made to them.
Sarma emphasised that Assam is at a crucial stage of development and requires sustained leadership and attention. He stated that several infrastructure, economic, and social welfare projects are currently underway, and his government aims to ensure their timely completion. According to the chief minister, continuity in leadership is essential to maintain momentum in governance and achieve long-term development goals.
A key issue highlighted by Sarma was illegal infiltration, which he described as a major challenge for the state. He reiterated that his government is determined to ensure that no infiltrators remain in Assam. Sarma noted that steps are being taken to strengthen border security, improve identification mechanisms, and enforce existing laws. He added that these measures are necessary to protect the rights, culture, and resources of the people of Assam.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has also echoed similar views, stressing the central government’s commitment to addressing infiltration concerns in the northeastern state. Shah has repeatedly stated that securing borders and preventing illegal entry remain national priorities, particularly in sensitive regions like Assam. The coordination between the state and central governments, according to Sarma, has helped improve law enforcement and administrative efficiency.
The Assam chief minister also expressed strong confidence in the Bharatiya Janata Party’s prospects in the state. He said the party is well positioned to secure a third consecutive term due to its development-oriented governance and focus on public welfare. Sarma pointed to improvements in infrastructure, healthcare, education, and law and order as key achievements of the current administration.
He added that the government has worked to improve connectivity in remote areas, attract investments, and create employment opportunities for youth. Welfare schemes aimed at women, farmers, and economically weaker sections have also been expanded, contributing to public support for the ruling party.
On the political front, Sarma dismissed speculation about his future role at the national level, stating that such discussions are premature. He said his energy and attention are fully devoted to Assam and that any future decisions would be taken at an appropriate time. For now, he said, his mandate is clear and focused on delivering results at the state level.
Political observers note that Sarma’s statement signals stability in Assam’s leadership ahead of upcoming political milestones. By ruling out national ambitions in the near term, the chief minister has sought to reassure party workers and voters of his commitment to the state.
As Assam continues its development journey, Sarma reiterated that his government will prioritise governance, security, and inclusive growth. He concluded by stating that his goal is to build a stronger and more prosperous Assam, while ensuring peace and stability across the state.
