The bandh, scheduled to take place across major towns and rural areas, has been called to raise concerns over what the opposition claims is a politically motivated move by the ruling government.

In a significant political development ahead of the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections, the INDIA bloc, a coalition of opposition parties, has called for a statewide bandh to protest the Special Intensive Revision of the electoral rolls. The bandh, scheduled to take place across major towns and rural areas, has been called to raise concerns over what the opposition claims is a politically motivated move by the ruling government.

The Election Commission of India recently announced a Special Intensive Revision of the voter list in Bihar. This process includes the verification of existing voters, removal of ineligible names, and inclusion of new voters. According to the Commission, such revisions are standard practice before elections to ensure accurate and up-to-date electoral rolls. However, the timing and intensity of the current revision process have raised concerns among opposition parties.

Leaders from the INDIA bloc argue that the revision could be used selectively to alter the voter base in favor of the ruling party. They claim that this could lead to the unjust deletion of voters from communities that have traditionally supported opposition parties. Accusing the process of lacking transparency, they are demanding that the revision be postponed until after the Assembly elections.

Political leaders held press conferences and public meetings throughout the state, urging citizens to support the bandh as a peaceful demonstration of dissent. They allege that the democratic rights of the people are at risk if electoral rolls are manipulated to benefit any political group. In districts like Patna, Gaya, Muzaffarpur, and Bhagalpur, protests have been planned in front of district collector offices and state election offices.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission has denied all allegations, stating that the revision is being conducted according to established procedures and with full transparency. Officials have urged all political parties to cooperate and participate in the verification process to ensure that all eligible voters are included.

In anticipation of possible disruptions during the bandh, the Bihar government has tightened security across the state. Police forces have been deployed in sensitive areas, and section 144 has been imposed in some districts to prevent large gatherings. Schools and colleges have been advised to remain closed, and public transport is expected to be affected.

The bandh call has received mixed reactions from the public. While some citizens express support for the demand for fair elections, others are concerned about the inconvenience caused by the shutdown. Traders and daily wage earners, in particular, have voiced worries about the economic impact of frequent political protests.

As the state prepares for its Assembly elections, the issue of voter list revision has added a new dimension to the political debate. With opposition parties uniting on this front, and the Election Commission standing firm on its procedures, the coming weeks are expected to witness heightened political activity and public engagement around electoral integrity.
