The opposition alliance known as the INDIA bloc has come out strongly in support of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, stating that it is not only his right but also his responsibility to comment on key national issues. This collective backing comes in the wake of recent criticisms from ruling party leaders who objected to Gandhi’s statements in Parliament.
In a joint statement, leaders from various opposition parties including the Congress, DMK, RJD, SP, and AAP, said that Rahul Gandhi has been raising concerns that reflect the sentiments of millions of citizens. They emphasised that as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, it is both expected and necessary for him to hold the government accountable through informed debate and public statements.
The INDIA bloc pointed out that the Parliament is a platform meant for discussion on issues affecting the country. Instead of engaging in meaningful dialogue, the ruling side has chosen to launch personal attacks against Rahul Gandhi, which they said undermines the spirit of democracy. The alliance also stated that targeting one leader for speaking on national matters is an attempt to suppress dissent and shift attention from core governance issues.
Several leaders of the bloc addressed the media jointly and reaffirmed their unity in standing behind Rahul Gandhi. They said his recent speeches in Parliament have been focused on national security, unemployment, inflation, farmers’ issues, and the need for institutional transparency. According to them, these are pressing concerns that deserve attention and discussion, not avoidance or diversion.
The statement from the alliance further added that in a democracy, elected representatives have the constitutional duty to raise questions and seek accountability. The opposition parties alleged that attempts to silence voices like that of Rahul Gandhi reflect an increasingly authoritarian approach by the ruling government.
The INDIA bloc also highlighted that Rahul Gandhi has been consistently engaging with citizens across the country through public outreach campaigns and meetings. They said that his growing popularity and connection with the people is a reason why the ruling side is becoming uncomfortable with his presence in the national discourse.
In contrast, leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party have accused Rahul Gandhi of making statements that are divisive and disrespectful to national institutions. The BJP maintains that opposition leaders should exercise restraint while speaking in Parliament and avoid statements that could undermine public trust.
However, the INDIA bloc leaders dismissed these allegations and reiterated their collective stand on the importance of free speech and robust debate in a democracy. They said that any effort to curtail discussion in Parliament, especially by targeting opposition leaders, weakens the institution itself.
As Parliament remains mired in protests and counter-allegations, the INDIA bloc has called on the ruling government to stop personal attacks and instead focus on addressing the genuine concerns raised by the opposition. They stated that they will continue to raise their voice in the interest of the people and the future of Indian democracy.
