Member of Parliament Awadhesh Prasad has strongly responded to recent comments made by former US President Donald Trump regarding the possibility of imposing 50 percent tariffs on Indian goods if he returns to office. Prasad dismissed the threat, stating that such rhetoric would not weaken India’s unity or have a major impact on its growing economy.
Trump’s comments came during a campaign speech in which he criticised what he described as unfair trade practices by countries like India. He suggested that the United States should impose significant tariffs on Indian products to address trade imbalances. These statements triggered responses from various political leaders in India, with Awadhesh Prasad being among the first to publicly address the issue.
According to Prasad, India’s economic foundation is much stronger today, thanks to years of reforms, increased exports, and a focus on domestic manufacturing. He said that India's economy has the resilience to withstand external trade pressures and political statements made for election purposes in other countries.
Prasad emphasised that India should not react out of fear but should instead focus on strengthening its internal systems and promoting its industries. He stated that no external threat could shake the unity of the Indian people or the country’s commitment to economic development. He also noted that such threats should be viewed in the context of election politics and not as formal policy announcements.
The MP also pointed out that India has diversified its trade partnerships globally and is less dependent on any single market. This diversification, he argued, gives India leverage in responding diplomatically to any unfavourable trade measures without compromising national interests.
Experts agree that while such comments from a prominent US political figure are noteworthy, they are unlikely to result in immediate policy changes. International trade decisions usually involve detailed negotiations and are subject to checks and balances, even in countries like the United States.
Prasad also urged citizens to stay informed and united, saying that national confidence is key during times of international tension. He reiterated that India has always stood firm on the principles of fair trade and mutual respect in its foreign policy and economic engagements.
The central government has not officially responded to Trump's statements yet, but sources suggest that India is closely watching developments in the US political scene. The Ministry of External Affairs is expected to issue a formal response if the rhetoric escalates into concrete policy proposals.
In conclusion, while Trump’s remarks may be intended to appeal to his domestic political base, leaders like Awadhesh Prasad are urging calm and confidence in India’s economic strength. India’s global economic role continues to grow, and most observers believe that its long-term prospects will not be significantly affected by political statements from abroad.
