Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has taken a strong stance against Prime Minister Narendra Modi following recent statements by former US President Donald Trump regarding India’s engagement with Russian oil. Trump had commented on India’s continued purchase of Russian crude, prompting a debate on energy imports and diplomatic messaging. In response, Ramesh criticized the government for sending mixed signals internationally, asserting that the approach lacked coherence.
Ramesh stated that while the Indian government publicly praises certain policies, it simultaneously imposes tariffs or restrictive measures in other areas, leading to confusion among international trade partners. He argued that such inconsistency affects India’s credibility in energy markets and may have economic repercussions domestically. According to Ramesh, a transparent and predictable policy framework is essential for fostering investor confidence and maintaining stable energy supply chains.
Speaking to the media, Ramesh emphasized that global energy markets are highly sensitive to political messaging. Any ambiguity or contradictory actions can impact crude pricing, import strategies, and India’s negotiating position on the international stage. He suggested that a consistent approach, aligned with India’s long-term strategic interests, would be more beneficial than reactive or selective policy gestures.
Ramesh also highlighted the domestic economic dimension of the issue, noting that tariffs and inconsistent policy announcements can affect fuel prices, industrial operations, and consumer confidence. He urged the government to clearly communicate its strategy on energy imports and tariffs, ensuring that stakeholders, including businesses and state agencies, can plan effectively.
The Congress leader further criticized what he described as “selective commendation” in India’s diplomatic engagements. He stated that praising initiatives in one international forum while enforcing conflicting measures in domestic economic policy sends a mixed message. Such contradictions, according to Ramesh, can undermine India’s efforts to position itself as a reliable trade and energy partner on the global stage.
Experts note that India’s energy imports, particularly from Russia, have been a subject of scrutiny amid geopolitical tensions and sanctions. Balancing diplomatic relations with global partners while securing energy needs requires careful policy calibration. Ramesh’s comments reflect growing concern among opposition leaders that inconsistent communication may have broader economic and strategic consequences.
Ramesh concluded by urging Prime Minister Modi and his government to adopt a unified stance on energy procurement, trade tariffs, and international diplomacy. Clear and consistent communication, he argued, is crucial to maintaining India’s credibility, ensuring energy security, and promoting economic stability.
The remarks by Ramesh come amid ongoing debates about India’s energy strategy, sanctions compliance, and global partnerships. Analysts believe that such discussions highlight the importance of transparency, policy predictability, and careful diplomatic messaging in navigating complex international energy markets.
