Jairam Ramesh Seeks Parliamentary Debate on India–US Trade Deal, Criticises Government

The government, however, has maintained that its trade negotiations are conducted in the national interest and are aimed at expanding export opportunities, attracting investment, and strengthening global partnerships.

Congress leader and senior parliamentarian Jairam Ramesh has demanded a comprehensive debate in Parliament on India’s trade agreements with the United States and the European Union. Raising concerns over recent developments, he criticised the government’s handling of international trade negotiations and questioned whether India’s economic interests are being adequately protected.

Ramesh alleged that the current approach to diplomacy has weakened India’s negotiating position. He referred to recent remarks by US President Donald Trump, who announced a trade deal and stated that it would significantly increase American agricultural exports to India. According to Ramesh, such claims raise serious questions about the implications of the agreement for Indian farmers and domestic markets.

The Congress leader emphasised that major trade agreements should not be finalised without detailed discussion and approval in Parliament. He argued that transparency is essential when decisions have long-term consequences for sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and employment. Ramesh said Parliament must be informed about the terms, commitments, and potential risks involved in these agreements.

He also expressed concern that increased imports under trade deals could undermine domestic production. According to him, policies encouraging higher imports may conflict with national initiatives aimed at strengthening local manufacturing and supporting farmers. He urged the government to ensure that trade negotiations align with India’s broader economic priorities.

Ramesh further pointed out that trade agreements with major global economies require careful evaluation, as they can influence pricing, market access, and competitiveness of Indian products. He warned that without proper safeguards, domestic industries could face increased pressure from foreign competition.

The demand for a parliamentary debate comes amid wider opposition criticism over the government’s handling of international trade and foreign policy. Opposition leaders have repeatedly called for greater accountability and consultation before entering into major economic agreements. They argue that Parliament should play a central role in reviewing such decisions.

The government, however, has maintained that its trade negotiations are conducted in the national interest and are aimed at expanding export opportunities, attracting investment, and strengthening global partnerships. Officials have stated that India seeks balanced agreements that promote growth while safeguarding domestic sectors.

As discussions around India’s trade relationships with the US and EU continue, the issue is expected to remain a key point of political debate. The outcome of any potential parliamentary discussion could influence future trade negotiations and shape India’s economic engagement with global partners.
