Jaishankar Criticizes Rahul Gandhi Over Meeting with Chinese Envoy During Doklam Crisis in Lok Sabha Debate

Speaking during the session, Jaishankar said, “During the Doklam crisis, the Leader of the Opposition decided it was more important to get a briefing from the Chinese Ambassador than from the Indian government.” He accused Rahul Gandhi of bypassing national institutions and undermining the government’s foreign policy handling by seeking information from a representative of the opposing nation.

In a pointed remark during the ongoing debate in the Lok Sabha, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar took aim at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his controversial meeting with the Chinese Ambassador during the 2017 Doklam standoff. The Doklam issue, which involved a military face-off between Indian and Chinese troops along the Bhutan border, was a major diplomatic challenge for India at the time.

The minister further stated that in times of national crisis, political leaders must stand with the government and not engage in acts that could be perceived as contrary to national interest. “This is not how responsible leadership behaves. There is a time to question, and a time to stand united. What message does this send to the world when opposition leaders choose foreign envoys over Indian institutions,” Jaishankar questioned.

The statement sparked immediate uproar in the Lok Sabha. Several Congress MPs stood up to protest and demanded a retraction, arguing that Jaishankar was misrepresenting the facts. Party spokespersons later clarified that Rahul Gandhi’s meeting with the Chinese Ambassador was part of a diplomatic courtesy and not intended to undermine India’s stance on Doklam.

Congress leaders defended Gandhi’s record on national security and foreign affairs, stating that he has always supported the armed forces and respected diplomatic boundaries. They also alleged that the government was trying to divert attention from current border tensions by raising past incidents in Parliament.

Political observers noted that Jaishankar’s comment was strategically placed amid broader criticisms the government has been facing regarding its handling of border issues with China. Bringing up the Doklam episode allowed the government to project a contrast between its approach and the opposition’s, especially in matters of national interest.

The meeting between Gandhi and the Chinese envoy had earlier been revealed in media reports in 2017 and was followed by criticism from the ruling party. At the time, Gandhi had defended the meeting, saying it was not unusual for opposition leaders to interact with foreign diplomats.

As the Lok Sabha debate continued, both sides remained firm in their positions, and the discussion briefly turned into a charged political exchange. The Speaker had to intervene to restore order in the House.

With foreign policy becoming a recurring theme in recent political debates, leaders across parties are now under increased scrutiny for their public and private engagements with international representatives. The Doklam issue, though years old, continues to echo in political narratives, particularly in the context of ongoing tensions along the Line of Actual Control.
