Srinagar: Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has come under fire over a recently held fashion show in Gulmarg, with critics questioning the necessity and appropriateness of such an event in the current political and social environment of the region.
The event, organized to promote tourism and local talent, featured designers and models showcasing their work at the famous ski resort. However, it sparked controversy as opposition parties and some social groups raised concerns over the timing and relevance of the show, given the ongoing challenges in the region.
Critics argue that while cultural events are essential for economic growth and tourism revival, a fashion show does not align with the sentiments of the local population. Political opponents have accused the former CM of prioritizing publicity over pressing issues such as unemployment and governance.
Defending the event, organizers stated that the fashion industry can play a crucial role in boosting the region’s economy by promoting Kashmiri handicrafts, traditional attire, and tourism. They emphasized that such platforms provide opportunities for local artisans and designers to reach a global audience.
Despite the backlash, Abdullah dismissed the controversy, stating that cultural activities should not be politicized and that promoting tourism through such initiatives is beneficial for the region’s economic stability. The debate continues, with supporters hailing the event as a step toward normalcy, while critics question its significance in the current scenario.
