The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) has adopted the amended Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which aims to address challenges in regulating and managing Waqf properties. The bill is scheduled to be presented to the Speaker on Thursday. Opposition members have expressed strong objections, labeling the bill 'unconstitutional' and indicating their intention to submit dissent notes.

Earlier, the committee meeting was marred by chaos, leading to the suspension of ten opposition MPs, including Kalyan Banerjee, Md. Jawaid, A Raja, Asaduddin Owaisi, Nasir Hussain, Mohibullah, M. Shanmugam, S. Ramasubbu, S. R. Parthiban, and S. R. S. Ramasamy. The suspensions followed a heated exchange during the discussion on the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024.

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, was referred to the JPC on August 8, 2024, after its introduction in the Lok Sabha by Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju. The bill seeks to amend the Waqf Act, 1995, to address issues and challenges in regulating and managing Waqf properties.

The opposition's dissent underscores the ongoing debate over the bill's provisions and its potential impact on the management of Waqf properties in India.
