Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has firmly defended the publication of the report, stating that it is a step toward ensuring social justice and evidence-based policy-making .

The recently released caste census report by the Karnataka government has stirred widespread political and social reactions, prompting an intense debate that has now been postponed to May 2 in the state Assembly. The delay comes amid calls for deeper analysis, transparency, and clarification of the findings from various political factions.

The report, officially referred to as the Social and Educational Survey, was commissioned by the previous Congress government in 2015 and conducted by the Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission. Its findings were submitted to the current Congress-led government, which made the data public earlier this month. The survey provides detailed insights into the caste composition and socio-economic status of various communities in the state.

According to early summaries, the data shows discrepancies between population estimates and reservation quotas currently allocated to different communities. This has led to debates over whether the current reservation framework needs restructuring, with several backward classes demanding increased representation.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has firmly defended the publication of the report, stating that it is a step toward ensuring social justice and evidence-based policy-making. "The caste census is not about dividing people but about understanding the real ground situation of communities," he said during a press interaction.

However, opposition parties, including the BJP and JD(S), have raised serious concerns. They have alleged that the report may have political motives and could be used to appease certain voter bases ahead of elections. BJP leaders also questioned the data collection process, transparency in methodology, and the lack of public awareness during the survey.

JD(S) leader H.D. Kumaraswamy went a step further, alleging that the report may deepen caste divisions rather than bring equity. "Instead of uniting society, such caste-based surveys could lead to more polarization," he warned.

The Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, after consulting all parties, decided to defer the debate until May 2 to allow members more time to review the document and prepare their responses.

Meanwhile, civil society organizations and activists have shown mixed reactions. Some welcomed the move as a long-overdue step to address inequalities, while others expressed caution about the political exploitation of such sensitive data.

Conclusion:

The caste census report in Karnataka has triggered a crucial dialogue on caste, equity, and representation. As the political climate heats up, the upcoming Assembly debate on May 2 is expected to be a key moment in shaping the state’s social policy. All eyes will be on how the government and opposition navigate this complex and sensitive issue.
