Political parties across Kashmir have condemned Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar following an incident at an official event where a female doctor’s veil was allegedly removed, sparking widespread outrage.

Political parties across Kashmir have condemned Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar following an incident at an official event where a female doctor’s veil was allegedly removed, sparking widespread outrage. Leaders from major political parties, including the National Conference, Peoples Democratic Party, CPI(M), and the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference, described the act as a serious violation of personal dignity, religious freedom, and constitutional values.

The incident has drawn sharp reactions from across the political spectrum in Jammu and Kashmir. Leaders stressed that an individual’s choice of attire is protected under the Constitution and that any attempt to interfere with such personal decisions amounts to an infringement of fundamental rights. They argued that forcing the removal of a veil reflects insensitivity towards religious beliefs and personal autonomy.

Senior leaders from the National Conference stated that the incident sets a dangerous precedent and sends the wrong message about respect for diversity and freedom in the country. The Peoples Democratic Party echoed similar sentiments, asserting that the Constitution guarantees the right to practice religion freely and that such acts undermine India’s secular ethos. PDP leaders demanded that Nitish Kumar issue an unconditional apology to the woman involved.

The CPI(M) also criticised the incident, calling it unacceptable and contrary to democratic principles. Party leaders said that public office holders must uphold constitutional values and ensure that personal freedoms are respected at all times. The Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference described the act as deeply disturbing, stating that it reflects a disregard for women’s dignity and autonomy.

Some leaders went further, suggesting that Nitish Kumar should take moral responsibility for the incident. They argued that the act has damaged public trust and raised serious questions about the conduct of those in positions of power. According to them, accountability is essential to preserve democratic values and public confidence in governance.

The controversy has also sparked broader discussions on women’s rights, religious freedom, and the responsibilities of public officials. Political observers note that incidents involving personal liberty often resonate strongly in Kashmir, where issues of rights and dignity remain deeply sensitive. The strong reaction from multiple parties indicates a rare moment of consensus on the need to uphold constitutional protections.

As calls for an apology continue to grow, the incident has become a focal point for debates on personal freedom and respect for religious practices in public spaces. Leaders have urged authorities to ensure that such incidents are not repeated and that officials at all levels are sensitised to constitutional values and individual rights.

The episode has added to the ongoing national discourse on freedom of expression and religious choice, with Kashmir-based parties emphasizing that respect for diversity is fundamental to India’s democratic framework.

Party leaders said that public office holders must uphold constitutional values and ensure that personal freedoms are respected at all times.
