KC Venugopal Moves Adjournment Motion in Lok Sabha Over India–US Trade Deal

The government has maintained that trade negotiations with global partners are conducted in national interest and are aimed at boosting exports, attracting investment, and strengthening bilateral relations.

Congress Member of Parliament KC Venugopal on Monday gave an adjournment motion notice in the Lok Sabha, seeking an urgent discussion on the proposed India–US trade deal. Raising serious concerns, he stated that the agreement could have far-reaching consequences for domestic industries, farmers, and the broader economic framework of the country.

According to Venugopal, Parliament has not been adequately informed about the terms and conditions of the trade agreement. He argued that such an important international deal should be discussed transparently in the House before any commitments are made. The absence of detailed disclosures, he said, raises questions about accountability and democratic oversight.

The Congress MP also expressed concern over reports suggesting that India may alter its oil procurement strategy under the proposed agreement. He questioned claims that India could significantly increase crude oil imports from the United States, warning that such a move might affect existing trade partnerships and domestic energy planning. He further pointed out that increased dependence on imports could undermine long-term energy security.

Venugopal also linked the issue to the government’s flagship Make in India initiative. He stated that encouraging higher imports, particularly in strategic sectors, could contradict the stated goal of strengthening domestic manufacturing. According to him, trade policies must be aligned with national industrial priorities and should protect local producers from unfair competition.

The adjournment motion seeks to suspend regular business in the Lok Sabha to allow a focused discussion on the matter. Such motions are typically moved when opposition members believe an issue is of urgent public importance. Venugopal stressed that the potential impact of the India–US trade deal on agriculture, manufacturing, and employment warrants immediate parliamentary attention.

The government has maintained that trade negotiations with global partners are conducted in national interest and are aimed at boosting exports, attracting investment, and strengthening bilateral relations. However, opposition parties have repeatedly demanded greater transparency and parliamentary scrutiny in international trade agreements.

This latest move by the Congress comes amid ongoing debates over India’s trade strategy, global supply chain realignments, and efforts to balance domestic growth with international cooperation. As discussions around the India–US economic partnership continue, the demand for clarity and accountability is expected to remain a key political issue in Parliament.

The absence of detailed disclosures, he said, raises questions about accountability and democratic oversight.
