Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday paid rich tributes to former Chief Minister and senior CPI(M) leader VS Achuthanandan, who passed away recently.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday paid rich tributes to former Chief Minister and senior CPI(M) leader VS Achuthanandan, who passed away recently. Remembering him as one of the most respected and principled leaders of the Left movement in India, Vijayan described Achuthanandan as a relentless fighter for the rights of the common people and a symbol of political integrity.

VS Achuthanandan, a founding member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and a key figure in Kerala’s post-independence political landscape, played a pivotal role in shaping the state’s progressive policies. He served as Kerala’s Chief Minister from 2006 to 2011 and later held the position of Opposition Leader, maintaining a strong presence in state politics for several decades.

Speaking at the memorial event, Pinarayi Vijayan said Achuthanandan was not just a leader, but a movement in himself. He recalled how Achuthanandan led major land reform initiatives, championed anti-corruption drives, and stood firm on issues affecting the working class and marginalized communities. Vijayan noted that his former colleague's leadership left an indelible mark on Kerala’s political and social fabric.

The Chief Minister also highlighted Achuthanandan’s deep involvement in trade union activities and his unwavering commitment to the principles of socialism and secularism. Even during difficult political circumstances, he remained steadfast in his ideology and earned the respect of his opponents and allies alike.

Following the announcement of Achuthanandan’s demise, tributes poured in from across the political spectrum. Leaders from the Congress, BJP, and various regional parties expressed their condolences and acknowledged his unmatched contributions to public service. The Kerala state government declared a period of mourning and ordered flags to be flown at half-mast across all government buildings.

Public arrangements were made for citizens to offer their final respects. Thousands of people gathered to pay homage, reflecting Achuthanandan’s deep connection with the masses. The CPI(M) party offices and various trade union centres also organized remembrance events to honour his legacy.

Born in 1923, Achuthanandan was one of the last surviving members of the CPI(M)’s founding generation. He was known for his simple lifestyle, honesty, and uncompromising attitude towards corruption and injustice. Despite facing internal party conflicts and political setbacks during his long career, he remained a popular figure among the people of Kerala.

Political observers noted that his absence leaves a significant void in the state’s political discourse. His contributions, especially in the areas of education, public health, and land rights, continue to influence Kerala’s governance model.

As Kerala bids farewell to one of its most iconic leaders, the state reflects on the values and vision that VS Achuthanandan championed throughout his life. His legacy, according to Chief Minister Vijayan, will continue to inspire generations of political activists and public servants.

He served as Kerala’s Chief Minister from 2006 to 2011 and later held the position of Opposition Leader, maintaining a strong presence in state politics for several decades.
