Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has strongly rejected a claim made by a BJP leader, who alleged that Sree Narayana Guru, the revered social reformer and spiritual leader, was a proponent of 'Sanatana Dharma'.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has strongly rejected a claim made by a BJP leader, who alleged that Sree Narayana Guru, the revered social reformer and spiritual leader, was a proponent of 'Sanatana Dharma'. The statement, which was seen as an attempt to associate the Guru’s legacy with Hindu orthodoxy, has led to a political controversy in Kerala.

Vijayan, in a clear rebuttal, said that the assertion was wrong and misrepresented the true teachings of Sree Narayana Guru. The Chief Minister stressed that the Guru’s philosophy was grounded in promoting social equality, secularism, and the empowerment of marginalized communities, particularly from the lower castes. Sree Narayana Guru is renowned for advocating "One Caste, One Religion, One God for All", which aligns with the principles of social justice and unity, rather than any exclusive religious ideology.

The dispute began when a BJP leader, speaking at an event, linked Sree Narayana Guru's ideas to 'Sanatana Dharma', the traditional Hindu religious order that the BJP and its affiliates champion. The Kerala CM’s statement was a direct challenge to the BJP’s attempts to appropriate the Guru’s legacy for political purposes.

Vijayan further criticized such attempts to distort historical facts and misguide people, asserting that Sree Narayana Guru's teachings had always been inclusive and progressive, aimed at creating a society free from caste discrimination. He emphasized that such claims were part of a broader strategy to polarize communities along religious lines and undermine the Guru’s true message.

The Kerala government, led by the Left Democratic Front (LDF), has consistently defended the secular and inclusive values espoused by Sree Narayana Guru. The controversy has led to a fierce debate among political circles, with Congress and Left parties aligning with Vijayan’s position, while BJP supporters have continued to defend the leader’s statement.

Sree Narayana Guru, who lived during the 19th and early 20th centuries, is widely regarded as one of India’s greatest reformers and spiritual leaders. His teachings, which emphasized equality and human dignity, have had a profound impact on Kerala’s social fabric.
