New Delhi: Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday defended Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla during a debate in Parliament and accused the Congress party of attempting to undermine constitutional institutions after losing power in the 2014 general elections.
Speaking during the discussion on the opposition motion, Rijiju said the Speaker has been carrying out his responsibilities in accordance with parliamentary rules and traditions. He stated that the role of the Speaker is crucial in ensuring smooth functioning of the Lok Sabha and maintaining order during debates.
Rijiju criticized the Congress party and said that certain opposition leaders have repeatedly raised objections against institutions when political outcomes do not favor them. According to the minister, democratic institutions such as Parliament, the judiciary, and constitutional offices must be respected by all political parties regardless of differences in political views.
The minister emphasized that the Speaker of the Lok Sabha plays an impartial role and is responsible for managing parliamentary proceedings. He said that the Chair must balance the opportunity for members to present their views while also ensuring that debates follow established rules and procedures.
During the debate, opposition members had expressed concerns regarding certain decisions taken during parliamentary proceedings. The opposition parties argued that their voices were not being adequately represented and that procedural fairness should be maintained at all times.
Responding to these concerns, Rijiju stated that parliamentary procedures are guided by long established conventions and rules that are applied equally to all members of the House. He added that the Speaker’s decisions are made in accordance with these guidelines and are necessary for maintaining discipline and order in the Lok Sabha.
Rijiju also said that Parliament is a platform where leaders from different political parties can debate national issues and express their perspectives. However he stressed that criticism should not undermine the credibility of constitutional institutions that form the foundation of India’s democratic system.
The debate in the Lok Sabha comes at a time when political tensions between the ruling government and opposition parties remain high. Members from both sides have frequently raised strong arguments regarding governance policy decisions and parliamentary conduct.
Political observers note that disagreements and debates are common in democratic legislatures and are considered part of the political process. Discussions in Parliament often involve intense exchanges as political leaders present differing viewpoints on policy and governance matters.
Rijiju called on all political parties to engage in constructive debate while respecting the dignity of the House and the institutions that govern parliamentary functioning. He said that maintaining the integrity of democratic institutions is essential for ensuring effective governance and public trust.
As parliamentary proceedings continue, leaders from both the ruling alliance and opposition parties are expected to raise additional issues related to governance public policy and legislative matters.
The debate over parliamentary procedures and institutional accountability is likely to remain a significant topic in the ongoing sessions of Parliament.
