Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Wednesday addressed concerns raised by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi regarding his right to speak in Parliament.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Wednesday addressed concerns raised by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi regarding his right to speak in Parliament. Responding to a letter written by Rahul Gandhi, Rijiju stated that every member of the House, including the Leader of Opposition, must follow parliamentary rules and procedures while speaking. He emphasized that the functioning of Parliament is governed by established norms that apply equally to all members, irrespective of their political affiliation.

Rijiju’s remarks came amid heightened tensions in the Lok Sabha, where repeated disruptions and protests by opposition members led to the adjournment of proceedings. According to the minister, Parliament cannot function effectively if rules are ignored, and maintaining order is essential for meaningful debate. He added that opportunities to speak are provided as per the rules of procedure and the discretion of the Chair.

The issue sparked strong reactions from the Congress party. Congress MP Ujjwal Raman Singh accused the central government of attempting to silence the opposition and stifle dissenting voices in Parliament. He said the opposition was being denied adequate space to raise important public issues and hold the government accountable. Singh argued that preventing senior opposition leaders from speaking undermines democratic traditions and weakens parliamentary democracy.

During the heated exchanges, sloganeering by opposition members disrupted House proceedings, eventually forcing the adjournment of the Lok Sabha. The situation escalated further when eight opposition MPs were suspended for violating parliamentary rules. The suspensions added to the political confrontation, with opposition parties alleging misuse of authority by the ruling dispensation, while the government maintained that disciplinary action was taken strictly in accordance with established procedures.

Government leaders defended the suspensions, stating that repeated disruptions prevent the House from conducting legislative business and waste valuable public time. They stressed that discipline and decorum are essential for Parliament to function and that members are expected to raise issues through proper channels. According to them, the Chair acted within its अधिकार to maintain order in the House.

The opposition, however, claimed that the government was using rules selectively to curb criticism. Congress leaders said that important national issues were being sidelined and that the opposition was being forced to resort to protests due to a lack of opportunities to speak. They demanded fair treatment and equal space for debate in the Lok Sabha.

The standoff highlights the ongoing friction between the ruling party and the opposition over parliamentary conduct and democratic space. With key legislative business scheduled in the coming days, political observers believe that dialogue between the government and opposition will be crucial to ensure smooth functioning of Parliament. The issue of balancing discipline with democratic expression is expected to remain a central theme in parliamentary discussions.

According to the minister, Parliament cannot function effectively if rules are ignored, and maintaining order is essential for meaningful debate.
