Rajiv Gandhi, who served as the sixth Prime Minister of India from 1984 to 1989, was assassinated on May 21, 1991, in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, during an election campaign.

Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was remembered across the political spectrum on his 34th death anniversary, with leaders from various parties, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior Congress figures, paying tribute to the late leader. Rajiv Gandhi, who served as the sixth Prime Minister of India from 1984 to 1989, was assassinated on May 21, 1991, in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, during an election campaign.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media to pay his respects, referring to Rajiv Gandhi as a “great son of India.” In his message, PM Modi said, “On his death anniversary, my tributes to our former Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi Ji. We remember his contributions to the nation.”

At the same time, Congress leaders gathered at Veer Bhumi in Delhi, the memorial dedicated to Rajiv Gandhi, to offer floral tributes. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, senior leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were present at the solemn event. A moment of silence was observed, and party leaders reflected on his contributions to the country, particularly in the areas of technology, education, and Panchayati Raj.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said Rajiv Gandhi brought forward a new vision for India’s future, particularly focusing on modernisation and technology. “He laid the foundation for India’s entry into the IT revolution and was instrumental in decentralising governance through the Panchayati Raj system,” said Kharge.

Rahul Gandhi, in his tribute, shared personal reflections and emphasized his father's belief in unity, secularism, and progress. “He always dreamed of an India that is strong, inclusive, and forward-looking. His values continue to guide us,” said Rahul Gandhi. The Congress party also released a short video tribute on social media highlighting Rajiv Gandhi’s achievements and legacy.

Apart from Delhi, Congress workers and supporters across the country organized commemorative events, prayer meetings, and community service programs. Many party units hosted discussions on his vision for India and the lasting impact of policies initiated during his tenure.

Political analysts noted that despite ideological differences, the tributes from leaders across party lines reflect the respect that Rajiv Gandhi still commands for his leadership and contributions. His push for computerization, expansion of telecom infrastructure, and youth-driven policies changed the trajectory of India’s development during the 1980s.

Security arrangements were tightened at Veer Bhumi and other key locations in view of the memorial events. The Indian Youth Congress and NSUI also participated in memorial activities, engaging young members in learning about Rajiv Gandhi’s contributions.

As India remembered one of its youngest Prime Ministers, the tributes served as a moment of reflection on the nation’s journey and the leaders who helped shape its path. The 34th death anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi was marked with dignity, unity, and a renewed focus on national progress and inclusive development.
