The Lok Sabha on Tuesday witnessed its first smooth functioning of the Question Hour during the ongoing monsoon session, after six continuous days of disruptions. The session had earlier been marred by repeated protests and adjournments caused by disagreements among members over key national issues.
For the first time since the beginning of the session, members of Parliament were able to fully utilize the scheduled hour for questions and answers, which is considered a vital part of legislative oversight. During the Question Hour, various members raised queries related to agriculture, infrastructure, education, public health, and employment. Ministers responded to the questions in detail, leading to meaningful exchanges between the government and opposition members.
The smooth conduct of proceedings was welcomed by the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, who appealed to all members to continue participating in the session responsibly and respectfully. The Speaker noted that debate and disagreement are central to democracy, but disruptions should not hinder the functioning of the House.
Leaders from both the ruling and opposition parties acknowledged the need for productive discussions. Parliamentary Affairs Minister praised the cooperative spirit displayed during the day and expressed optimism that the rest of the session would witness similar discipline. He stated that several important bills, including those related to economic reforms and social welfare, are scheduled for discussion in the coming days.
The opposition too highlighted the importance of Question Hour as a platform to hold the government accountable and raised concerns over the issues they plan to debate further in the session. They urged the government to allow adequate time for discussions on public grievances, including inflation, unemployment, and national security.
The monsoon session of Parliament began with high expectations but was largely disrupted due to political differences and protests on various issues. The lack of debate during the earlier days had raised concerns among citizens, experts, and civil society about the effectiveness of parliamentary functioning.
With Question Hour being conducted successfully on Tuesday, there is renewed hope for meaningful legislative work in the remaining days of the session. Parliamentary observers and constitutional experts have consistently emphasized the importance of uninterrupted Question Hour, as it provides a crucial link between the public and their elected representatives.
The government is expected to introduce several bills in the coming days, and committee reports are scheduled to be tabled. Issues such as farmer welfare, price rise, job creation, and international relations are likely to dominate discussions.
As the session progresses, both ruling and opposition parties are under public scrutiny to ensure that Parliament functions efficiently and reflects the will and concerns of the people. The return to orderly proceedings is seen as a step in the right direction toward restoring faith in democratic institutions and legislative accountability.
