The Lok Sabha Secretariat has officially sought a response from the West Bengal government following a complaint lodged by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament Sukanta Majumdar.

The Lok Sabha Secretariat has officially sought a response from the West Bengal government following a complaint lodged by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament Sukanta Majumdar. The complaint, submitted to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, outlines alleged incidents of obstruction and mistreatment that occurred during Majumdar’s participation in a political programme in West Bengal.

According to parliamentary sources, Majumdar, who is also the President of the West Bengal unit of the BJP, claimed that he was prevented from carrying out his responsibilities as an elected representative. The complaint reportedly includes references to administrative interference and alleged misuse of state machinery during the event in question.

Taking cognisance of the matter, the Lok Sabha Secretariat has forwarded the complaint to the West Bengal government and requested an official explanation. The Secretariat’s move is in line with the procedures established to protect the rights and privileges of elected members of Parliament. It has stated that the dignity and operational freedom of Members must be safeguarded, irrespective of political affiliations.

Officials confirmed that the issue has been placed under review, and depending on the state government's response, further action could be taken. The Speaker’s office is closely monitoring the developments and may consider referring the matter to a parliamentary committee if the explanation provided is unsatisfactory.

Sukanta Majumdar has maintained that the alleged incidents represent a broader pattern of political hostility in the state. He has urged Parliament to intervene and ensure that Members of Parliament are not hindered in their public duties. In a media interaction, he stated that such actions not only undermine democratic principles but also violate the constitutional framework that guarantees freedom of expression and movement to elected officials.

In response, officials from the West Bengal government have not yet issued a public statement. However, sources within the administration have indicated that the complaint will be reviewed, and a detailed reply will be sent to the Lok Sabha Secretariat as requested.

The matter has sparked political debate, with BJP leaders accusing the state government of suppressing opposition activities, while ruling party members have dismissed the allegations as politically motivated. Parliamentary observers note that the incident underscores ongoing tensions between the central and state governments, particularly in politically sensitive states like West Bengal.

Legal experts suggest that the Lok Sabha’s involvement in such matters reflects the importance of maintaining institutional respect for Parliament and its members. They also emphasize the need for clear protocols when elected officials allege obstruction in the exercise of their duties.

As the situation develops, the response from the West Bengal government will be key in determining the future course of action. The case may also set a precedent for how complaints from MPs regarding state-level incidents are handled in the future by parliamentary authorities.
