While the government maintains that the rules are being applied fairly the Opposition continues to call for greater space for debate on key national issues.

Om Birla, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, has stated that all Members of Parliament must follow the rules and procedures of the House. He emphasised that no member including the Leader of Opposition can act above parliamentary regulations and that the authority of the chair must be respected during legislative proceedings.

Birla made these remarks while responding to criticism from Opposition parties regarding his handling of parliamentary debates. The comments came shortly after an Opposition backed resolution seeking his removal from the Speaker position was rejected in the House.

According to Birla the rules of Parliament require members to obtain permission from the chair before speaking during debates or quoting from documents. He explained that these procedures exist to ensure order and fairness in discussions and to allow all members an equal opportunity to participate in debates.

The Speaker also highlighted that maintaining discipline in the House is essential for the smooth functioning of parliamentary democracy. He said the chair is responsible for ensuring that proceedings follow established rules and that discussions remain organised and respectful.

Opposition members have recently raised concerns about the way debates and speaking opportunities are managed during sessions. Some leaders argued that Opposition voices are not always given sufficient time to present their views on important national issues. These concerns led to the proposal of a resolution seeking Birla removal from the Speaker role.

However the resolution did not succeed in the House and Birla continues to preside over the proceedings. Government members have supported the Speaker position and stated that parliamentary rules must be followed by all parties to maintain order and efficiency.

The functioning of Parliament often involves intense debate between the government and Opposition especially during discussions on policy matters legislation and national developments. Speakers are expected to remain neutral and ensure that parliamentary procedures are followed by all members regardless of their political affiliation.

Birla also reiterated that the chair treats all members equally and decisions are taken according to established parliamentary guidelines. He noted that members are free to express their opinions but must do so within the framework of the rules set by the House.

Observers of parliamentary affairs say that such disputes between the Speaker and Opposition parties are not uncommon in democratic legislatures. Differences over procedural matters often arise during periods of strong political debate.

The latest developments highlight the continuing tensions between the ruling government and Opposition parties in Parliament. While the government maintains that the rules are being applied fairly the Opposition continues to call for greater space for debate on key national issues.

As parliamentary sessions continue both sides are expected to remain engaged in discussions over legislative matters while the Speaker office works to maintain order and ensure that proceedings follow the established procedures of the House.

According to Birla the rules of Parliament require members to obtain permission from the chair before speaking during debates or quoting from documents.
