However, concerns have been raised that these reforms have resulted in discrepancies and omissions that affect a significant number of properties traditionally managed under the Waqf system.

A major political controversy has emerged in Jammu and Kashmir following reports that nearly 7000 Waqf properties have been excluded from official records and administrative control. Former Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party President Mehbooba Mufti has termed the development a serious setback for the Muslim community, stating that it represents the latest in a series of decisions that negatively impact minority institutions in the region.

According to reports, several Waqf assets, including religious structures, community land, and heritage properties, were not incorporated into the updated records after recent administrative changes. The Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board, which oversees community and religious assets, had undergone several reforms in recent years. However, concerns have been raised that these reforms have resulted in discrepancies and omissions that affect a significant number of properties traditionally managed under the Waqf system.

Mehbooba Mufti stated that the exclusion of these properties raises serious questions about transparency and motives behind the administrative process. She argued that Waqf resources play a crucial role in supporting religious institutions, social welfare activities, and community development projects. Any disruption in their management, she said, has long-term consequences for local communities that rely on these assets for cultural, educational, and religious support.

The former Chief Minister further urged the administration to release a detailed explanation addressing how such a large number of properties went missing from official records. She argued that the issue cannot be dismissed as a clerical error and needs thorough investigation. According to her, the matter reflects a broader trend in which institutions associated with minority communities have faced increasing pressure after the reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir in 2019.

Political parties across the region have also sought clarity. Leaders from several opposition groups said that the government must ensure accountability and restore all omitted properties to the Waqf Board. They emphasised that Waqf assets are protected by law and must continue to be used solely for the welfare of the community.

Community representatives have expressed concern that the loss of these properties may weaken religious and social institutions that depend on Waqf funding. Some leaders have called for an independent audit to determine the extent of the discrepancy and prevent similar issues in the future.

On the administrative side, officials have not yet issued a formal statement addressing the controversy. The silence has added to the political tension, as opposition parties continue to demand a transparent review of the entire Waqf property list. Civil society groups have also urged the government to publish updated records and engage with community bodies to avoid mistrust.

As the debate continues, the issue is likely to remain a key point of political discussion in Jammu and Kashmir. The concerns raised by Mehbooba Mufti have resonated with several community groups who see the matter as part of a larger conversation about safeguarding traditional institutions, ensuring fair governance, and protecting minority rights within the Union Territory.

The former Chief Minister further urged the administration to release a detailed explanation addressing how such a large number of properties went missing from official records.
