Vikas Gogawale, son of Shiv Sena minister Bharat Gogawale, surrendered before the Mahad police in Maharashtra in connection with the violence that erupted during municipal council elections in Raigad district.

Vikas Gogawale, son of Shiv Sena minister Bharat Gogawale, surrendered before the Mahad police in Maharashtra in connection with the violence that erupted during municipal council elections in Raigad district. The surrender followed sharp criticism from the Bombay High Court, which questioned the state government over the delay in arresting the accused despite serious allegations.

The incident relates to clashes that broke out during the election process in Mahad, leading to injuries and damage to property. Following the violence, multiple cases were registered by the police, and several individuals were named as accused. Vikas Gogawale was among those booked, but his arrest had not taken place for several days, drawing judicial scrutiny.

During a recent hearing, the Bombay High Court expressed concern over what it described as selective action by the police. The court questioned why the son of a sitting minister had not been taken into custody while other accused had faced immediate legal action. The observations prompted widespread attention and intensified pressure on the state administration.

Subsequently, the Maharashtra government informed the High Court that Vikas Gogawale had surrendered before the Mahad police. Taking note of this submission, the court recorded the development and proceeded with the hearing. The judges, however, made it clear that the investigation must be conducted fairly and without any political influence.

In a related development, another accused in the same case, Shreeyansh Jagtap, withdrew his bail application. Legal experts believe this could indicate a shift in strategy as the investigation progresses and more details emerge from police inquiries.

According to police sources, the investigation is focused on identifying those responsible for instigating the violence and determining whether there was any organized attempt to disrupt the electoral process. Statements from witnesses, video footage, and mobile phone records are being examined as part of the probe.

The Mahad poll violence has sparked a political debate in Maharashtra, with opposition parties accusing the ruling dispensation of shielding influential individuals. The Shiv Sena leadership has denied these allegations, stating that the law will take its own course and that no one will be protected from legal action.

The case is expected to continue under close judicial monitoring, given the High Court’s strong stance on ensuring accountability. Further hearings are likely to assess the progress of the investigation and the role of each accused in the incident.
