On the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge paid a heartfelt tribute, recognising the significant role played by Rao in shaping India’s political and economic landscape during a transformative period. In his statement, Kharge remembered Rao as a visionary statesman who laid the foundation for India’s modern economic framework.
Kharge stated that Narasimha Rao’s leadership came at a time when the nation was facing one of its most challenging economic crises. Despite the political instability and economic uncertainty of the early 1990s, Rao showed remarkable resolve and introduced wide-ranging economic reforms that liberalised India’s economy and integrated it with the global market. These reforms, Kharge noted, opened up new opportunities in trade, investment, and industry, changing the course of India’s future.
Rao served as India’s ninth Prime Minister from 1991 to 1996 and is often credited with initiating the economic liberalisation process, working closely with then-Finance Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. These policy changes helped pull India out of a balance of payments crisis and laid the groundwork for decades of economic growth.
In addition to his economic policies, Kharge also emphasised Rao’s efforts in strengthening India’s democratic institutions and administrative machinery. He highlighted Rao’s deep understanding of constitutional values, multilingual scholarship, and ability to manage complex political challenges.
Mallikarjun Kharge called upon party members and the public to remember Rao not just for his reforms, but also for his lifelong commitment to the nation. He added that Rao’s contributions continue to guide India’s journey in various sectors, including education, science and technology, and foreign policy.
The Congress party observed Rao’s birth anniversary with remembrance events held at party offices and various public places across the country. Senior leaders offered floral tributes and shared reflections on Rao’s contributions. Many emphasised his calm and intellectual approach to leadership, especially during turbulent times.
While P.V. Narasimha Rao's legacy has been subject to political debate in the past, recent years have seen growing recognition of his achievements, including within the Congress party itself. Several leaders from across political lines have acknowledged his pivotal role in modernising India’s economy and navigating a coalition-era Parliament with political maturity.
Political analysts noted that Kharge’s tribute is part of a broader Congress effort to reclaim and honour the legacy of leaders who played key roles in shaping the party and the country. The emphasis on Rao’s governance and reform agenda is also seen as a move to connect with younger voters and economic stakeholders who value stable, reform-oriented leadership.
In closing his tribute, Kharge said that the nation will always remember the vital role P.V. Narasimha Rao played in India’s progress, and that his contributions will continue to inspire future generations of leaders and citizens alike.
